The Wal-Mart Bargain Bin(s)

There's always at least two big ones around here. See them 2 for $10 or $11 or so. Just a big jumble of leftovers distributors are clearing... Bins are so deep the bottom 1/2 to 2/3rds can't even be reached. Anyway, you know what I am referring to.

Questions are:
Do you normally go through them?
Do you ever find any goodies in there?
Do you want to use this thread as an alert for what you have found or others are finding?

I'm obviously interested. I've never been able to resist a good bargain bin (especially the good old days with LP's).

Was elbow deep in one today and turned up four buys at 2 for $11:
- The Peacemaker (WS) a decent blow 'em up Clooney Kidman flick
- The Contender (WS) never seen it a total flyer with a good cast
- The Buddy Holly Story (WS/FS) The role that got Gary Bussey noticed
- Black Beauty (FS) .... Hey, it was for the wife...

There were a few others I might have grabbed if they were WS. "CreepShow" was one... I forget the others.

All totaled I probably spent a half hour diggin for these treasures. I figure the distribution of these titles is likely national and we can help alert each other to some decent, if not great buys...

Anyway... Whatdoya think?
More later,
Tour...

I'm proud to say that I work at Wal Mart as a Wal Mart associate, and I love to go through the bargain DVD bin. Some of my finds are:

PRETTY BABY with Brooke Shields as a 12 year old prostitute. There are some nude scenes of Brooke in her pre-pubescent days, and the transfer is a pristine wide-screen.

    WILD THINGS WIDESCREEN

    A LIFE LESS ORDINARY WIDESCREEN

CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR WIDESCREEN

    DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN WIDESCREEN

Bought a few a more too over the years.

Damn, you don't post like a guy in his 60's... :D

Wild Thing was one of the others only there in FS.

So you can give us the scoop on when good stuff arrives?

I wish I could, but these titles are sent out to the stores in pre-packaged units, we don't choose titles from a skew sheet.

If not advance notice, at least what catches your eye.

Do they come all jumbled up or in bundles of same title?

The bargain bin DVDs come in a box that contains about a dozen titles with anywhere from 1 item of a title (i.e., PRETTY BABY with Brooke Shields) to dozens of items of a title. Thus, I can "put asaide" interesting titles for me and my friends.

    Tour,

Man do I know what you mean about those deep bins. While your looking through one side and tossing rejects to the other side of the bin, there's always some other guy on the other side doing the same thing!

I picked up a childhood favorite from the bin for $5...The Poseidon Adventure. Sound wasn't that great, as expected, but the widescreen picture was excellent.

The Wal-mart in town actually separates the discs on to racks and sells them for 8.44, I got Rudy and Frequency at that price

    Edit: They were 8.44 each.

    For $2.94 a pop, I'll dig... :)

Actually we also see $8.88's sometimes here.

Did pick "Almost Famous" off the rack for $9+ yesterday... Love that movie...

Wal-Mart actually does have some pretty good DVDs at good prices. I've bought a ton of em. Makes me wonder tho- why they sell rated "R" movies but will only sell the edited audio cds ? Seems kinda screwy

I try to limit what movies I get from Wal-Mart, I found that even some of the movies are edited (Silence of the lambs, Old School) even though they are not marked as being edited  .

If they were edited and not marked that way I would pretty much have to go ballistic on them.

Have to assume a lot of these bargains are distributor overstocks, so it's possible that some titles might be the edited versions. A fair number of discs are released in more than one version...

What Tour2ma said may be true, but I have to agree with Fireshoes. If I ever bought any movie or CD that was edited, but not marked as being such, then I would be very upset. There are different versions of different titles, but close examination of the case "should" indicate this. For example the movie WEIRD SCIENCE. Yes Wal Mart does have 2 different versions of this movie on DVD, but one version is clearly marked (in very, very small print) that it is "the original theatrical version" and the other one is marked "home video version." So as consumers, it is very important to pay attention to the package.

The Silence of the lamb movie I bought (VCR, before I bought the dvd player) the scene with Hannable and Foster upon one of their first meetings together the part where she replys "I can smell your c%#t" is missing, it could be just a blip in the tape I really don't know and have gotten ride of it. I have since replaced it with with a DVD from Columbia House. The other movie Old School I have not seen but my brother-in law bought it from Wal-Mart and watched it then later went to a friends house and watched a rented one and he said there were scenes in that one that were not in his. Just makes me wonder if it was possible if Wal-Mart has that much influence being as big as they are, after all they can make audio Co.'s and artists change the music they produce and sell. I don't like the idea of someone telling me what I can and cannot listen to or watch. I will buy some movies from them but if it is really gorry or has volgarity (such as those mentioned)I will buy from somewhere else just to be sure that it hasn't been altered.

I got Ronin, 8mm, and The Score in the Wal-Mart 'Garbage' DVD bin.

    What a deal.

I had always seen those movies on the 'old movies we need to get rid of, but are still good rack', but these were in the bins!

    Good nabs there...

If Wal-Mart will sell uncensored copies of [b[8mm[/b], they'll sell just about everything else...

I thought Cage was very good in that.

That deep bin that Walmart uses tears up your arms and the best ones are always in the bottom.

I started going into my Super "W" and grabbing a cart. You know something is up when I do this. You all know that "real guys" don't need no stinking cart! Every time I get one, it pulls to one side when empty & really pisses me off.

I pull up to the bin and park for awhile. Using the empty cart to fill until I get the DVDs I want, I have actually had a number of other shoppers come up and say " I always wanted to do this but didn't have the guts, can I help you out?" It usually ends up with a crowd gathering like vultures at a garage sale!

I have had others offer to put all the DVDs back into the bin as long as they can get what they want.

Since doing this a couple of months ago, I see empty carts sitting next to the bin waiting to be used.

I use this bin to replace all the VHS tapes that I collected throughout the years.

Indeed. I guess I was a tidbit suprised it was there.

I had seen it a couple times before, but man it was just as disturbing as the first time I had seen it.

...It was actually better knowing that James Gandolfini was in it as an actor I am now familar with. I wasn't familar with him much before that....yet he's in a ton of movies I own.

Anyhow...this movie was written by the same guy who wrote Se7en, which happens to be my all time favorite movie. While it doesn't live up to it IMO, it's still a damn good film.

Personally I like disturbing movies like this because it shows things as the could happen...rather than making fake 'monsters' to try to scare you. Reality is much scarier than fiction, IMO.

So if you want to be scared and you haven't seen this film...give it a rental. As I said it's more suspenseful and disturbing than scary in and of itself...but it kinda makes your mind wander a bit afterwords and to me that defines scary.

Have you seen Matchstick Men? If not give it a rental. Cage is in that well. He's proving he's a real good actor.

No, I haven't... It's been on my list, I'll bump it up a couple notches.

Know what you mean about 8mm... Only seen it once, as it was very disturbing, but I could not turn it off and could not predict where it was going. Liked Se7en as well, but Brad Pitt spoiled it for me. Thought he was a little over the top acting-wise.

    DG,
LOL....... That cart use is effin' Brilliant, and we're talkin' Guiness in bottles brilliant there.

TBH, I always figured the ones in the bottom were the previous week's, month's, year's left overs. But next time I go I'm doing it.
