No thats not overkill but I personally don't like floor standing speakers are surround speakers. You can't achieve the proper Height required for surround material unless you put them on some kind of platform or like your surround speakers at ear level.
I prefer more of a 72 inches to the tweeter on my surround speakers.

My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -
@nbrowser I have for power onkyo nr3010 and i am trying to put together a nice 7.2 HT but it will be used for music. this is my basement that has 8ft walls and is a open 25x25 room i do have a set of 703 that i am going to be using for the surounds and thought i already have a extra 705 that i would just buy one more and use them for 4 channel music and back rears for HT

i do plan on adding a amp or two

If the majority is going to be for music, then your best bet is to have all 5 speakers the same, especially multi channel music. If that's the game plan, I say go for it, but add a good amp and decent cabling and a good source.HT SYSTEM-
Sony 850c 4k
Pioneer elite vhx 21
Sony 4k BRP
SVS SB-2000
Polk Sig. 20's

Acoustic zen Matrix 2 IC's
Wireworld eclipse 7 ic's
Audio metallurgy ga-o digital cable
Kitchen

Not sure what configuration you are using, but 3 OR 4? How will they be hooked up?
Normal surround usually requires a left center and right and a minimum of 2 surround speakers.
I have never seen or heard a surround set up that used floor standing speakers, as the usual intent of surround in movies, it that the sound be above.
Are you thinking of putting them suspended from the ceiling or some other idea?

@K_M they will be on the floor. I have three because I bought a set of new dark mahogany and they got damaged day of shipping. the seller called me to tell me what happen and he didnt have anymore in stock but cherry and told me if I would take the cherry he would give me the damaged one free. I had to replace the 5in driver. but the it sounds great. it has a couple good nicks, one in front and one in back but just thinking of buying the fourth mainly for music.

@k_M I do have a 706 as a center and 703's as rears. the reason I am asking is I haven't had all this set up yet my basement is being finished right now and I have been buying the speakers when i find then on sale. so I have herd all the speakers but just not all together at once.

Awesome sounding deal!
Okay makes total sense now. I did not see that you had a centre and rear speakers.
We did try one set up with speakers on floor but angled upwards that worked well. Never really found the sweet spot with floor standing rear surrounds, as the sound seems to originate from too low an area, but if your room is set up well for it, it may work out great...
Good luck....Jealous of that "Free" speaker! -
