I have the Roku 3 and love it. Don't have a 4K TV yet but if I did I would get the Roku 4.Anaheim Hills CA,

I am still wondering if I want a 4 myself. I have two Roku 3's.
I did read that they had some issues with the 5.1 surround on the Roku 4. I figure I will wait a bit and decide on whether to get the Roku 4 or the Amazon Fire TV, which now also supports 4K. -

Hi

No, unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. The source has to supply 4K content. Cable doesn't supply 4K. The Roku 4 will stream 4K if it's available and Netflix does have some content that's 4K so you can watch it through there.
My TV is a low end smart 4K Hisense but unfortunately streaming Netflix directly through it's application doesn't show 4K either. I am not sure if there are smart TVs that can play 4K streaming content on their own, but I don't think so, I think you need a Roku 4 or similar streaming box to get it. -
Nope, actually most 4k sets do stream 4k if the source allows such as Netflix, that's why I asked. They pretty much give you the same available apps as the individual players now. Differences being in how well they wi-fi and software for internet use.HT SYSTEM-

Huh, I stand corrected. I will have to check mine out. I made the assumption that it wouldn't do that on it's own. -
You made that assumption because 4k TV's in general have no manual to speak of these days. You have to google frickin' everything now.
In your settings, should be something to turn on 4k, but be aware turning it on may only work with certain picture modes.
I'm not familiar with your brand, but you may still like the menu and software better in the Roku which was built specifically for that purpose. TV's are not, it's more of an after thought but some do it better than others and most are getting better at it. I'd say try it first before dropping the coin on another Roku. Cost ya nothing.HT SYSTEM-

You are not wrong.
Plus, that TV doesn't get a lot of use. Evening news, Jeopardy and a few blu ray movies most of the time. When I open Netflix on it, there is a row that shows 4K content, and that list doesn't show at all on my other TVs with the Rokiu 3, so I know where the 4K content is. There's just not yet a lot of it available and even less that I care about.
I think, unless you get at least a 65" screen (mine is 55"), a good 1080P has just as good of a picture, at least until more content becomes available.
I did read that 4K blu rays are now being sold and at least some of them contain a copy of the standard blu ray as well. I think that's what I will buy going forward and use the standard one until I get one of the new 4K players.
irrenhaus, I apologize if this turned into a thread jack.
