I'm sure at least some of us have these moments..

I was reading a thread in the hookup forum and one guy had issue with getting sound becuase he still had plastic coating on the speaker wire when inserting them into the connectors...I laughed out loud becuase I too have done this...and more than once...

Then there's the time I built an entertainment center into a wall and had to completely dismantle it becuase I forgot to run electrical first...

Then there's the time I attempted to take an amp our of my vehicle without first disconnecting from the battery...got quite a shock out of that one...

Then there was the time I spent three hours troubleshooting a sub I had and ended up discovering that it can't get power if it's not plugged in...

I'm sure there's lots more...

Am I the only one...

Watched a movie without surround or center channel on and wondered why it sounded bad....
    Let me elaborate on this...

I had the mains on, the center and surround amps off, and pro logic set to on -- it sounded very very bad

Another one would be listening to the RTi70 with the tweeters off, took me 30 minutes to realize I didnt blow the tweeters....

There are many others, I just cant remember anymore....lol

At a friend's house, took a pile of old Pyle subwoofers rated at about 150 watts RMS each and proceeded to load them with about 1500 watts and played bass tone cd's through them just to watch the voice coils eject from the speakers. They got good hang time if it took a chunk of speaker cone or spider with it!

The other dumb thing I did with audio was I let my friend borrow an amplifier to push a pair of Kicker Solobarics in his little red 'vette that he used to deliver pizzas. I hooked it all up for him and he shut the hatch, started the car, turned on the lights and stuff and then turned on the radio. He played a cd by a rap group called Channel Live. The first bass note blew the rear window glass out.

just tonight i did a stupid thing.. i was replacing the IC from the pre out on the receiver to a 2 ch Adcom amp.. well i plugged the IC's into the tape out puts instead.. holy moly... i nearly left skid marks in my shorts.. i jumped about 6" off the ground.

In case you've never done such a thing.. it's hella LOUD!! must have been somewhere around 105+db loudness coming from the RT800's. I could not for the life of me figure out why the volume knob on the preamp wasn't working.. finally i got behind and looked.. damn! i plugged em into the tape outputs.

Just glad I didn't blow any drivers.. damn thing was so loud.

    DOH!

Don't plug a turntable with a built-in phono eq into the phono input on your receiver.

I was pulling a broken sub driver out of the enclosure, pulled off the wires and dropped them into the box. I left the feckin thing plugged in and turned on. The wires hit the circuit board, and fried the plate amp.

My old Denon DCD-1500 has two pairs of analog outs, fixed and variable. In my last equipment move I hooked its IC pair up to the R ch fixed and the R ch variable. Got some very unusual tunes to say the least and even took one new CD back it "sounded so bad". Took me almost a week to finally ID the problem.

When I first bi-amped my SRS's I had left and right channels reversed on the tweets only. Some spacey, illogical SDA'ing for a short time that evening...

I got my first stereo for Christmas when is 16. I went to bed that night dreaming of a receiver, cassette deck, and speakers (This was 1981). I woke up the next morning to an all in one Magnavox with radio, turntable, cassette. I'm sure most of you guys in your mid 30's and older remember these. I was dissapointed w/o a doubt but made the best of it. After listening to it for a few weeks and being seriously underwhelmed by the quality my best friend at the time and I decided to embark on my first tweak. We rigged a car equalizer into the speaker and power wire. Here finally was the killer sound we had been craving.....this stereo kicked **** for about 1.5 seconds until it all ended in a loud hum and a cloud of smoke. The next stereo I got I had to buy.

A big ***KABOOM*** the first time I hooked up the ASL pre to the NAD. Put the NAD into protect mode. I didn't know the rule with tube pre/ss amp was: pre first (for about 15 sec) and then the amp. Turn off is: amp first and then pre amp. Let this be a lesson to those planning to buy a tube pre:).
