fx300i to replace RT25i surrounds?

Local CL has a pair of fx300i's for $80. Would they be a good upgrade over the RT25i's I am using as surrounds in my HT? I haven't heard fx300's.

If I decide to sell the RT25's, I figure it's probably a wash on the cost.

I haven't heard the fx300is, so take this with a grain of salt. My only thoughts are that the tweeters in the fx300is don't match your setup, and that the rt25is are great speakers that throw a pretty wide soundstage, so I don't know that you would gain much with the dipoles. I think you would gain more by getting a little more power behind them, but obviously that's a different issue altogether.

Yeah, I know I need more power. Been hoping to step up to a Pio Elite but can't do that yet. Food and shelter a bit more important right now.

Didn't mean to force that issue man, with four youngins I totally get it. Mainly saying that I think if I were you I would stick with the rt25is fwiw...

No offense taken, I agree with you. Just thought, since I have never heard the fx300, I would ask in case they were a big step up in ambient sound.

    Jimbo,

The FX speakers do have a different sound to them and work best (in my experience) in surround duty on side walls. I'd agree with Paul though that the RT25i's are great little speakers. I picked up a pair on his recommendation recently and love them. If you're using them as rear surrounds, I'd probably keep them over the FX's since the tweeters are a match for your other speakers. As far as side surround, the dipoles do a great job 'surrounding' the listener with sound. Hope that helps...

The FX's were built for ambient sound and a wider field, if that's what your shooting for. Yes, they will sound different than the 25's, but in a good way. Sounds will come from areas of the room that will have you turning your head to look.

Comes down to a matter of preference is all. I think you'll dig them.

My main point is that the tweeters don't match. But yes, all things being equal I the soundstage should be wider...

Thanks, guys. I don't have a setup where I can use side surrounds, so the RT25's are in the rear. I guess I will stick with that.

I really like the little bookies and have tested them out as fronts and, other than bass, they perform very well.

That series (RTxxi) is my personal fav in the rti line, and the RT25is are my favorite of the series. I think you have a nice, easy to drive setup there...if I had the space, I would have rt55is in my HT, but alas the wifey say NOGO!

Thanks. I picked up the speakers off CL over a couple years after reading comments about them on this forum. Unfortunately, I got the Yamaha receiver before I joined here, otherwise I would have something started with something else.
