Done with them I am. Had two transactions with them using my account with them, and they charged the account without difficulty, AND zapped my bank account for identical amounts!
It will take them up to thirty days to investigate for potential "fraud" and issue the funds back to my bank account!
The only fraud here is PayPal!!!

I use Paypal as a convenience. I guess I have been lucky as I can't think of a time when I ever had an issue.
One thing I do is purchase things using Paypal Credit and then pay it off when the bill comes due. That way they are dealing with "their" own money and not tying up my personal bank funds if there is an issue as described above, etc.
Plus, many times you can get 6-12 months no interest, so what the hey.......if I can get free money for 6 months or a year why not. Typically it's on $99 or more purchases. I shop A LOT on-line and almost always use Paypal exclusively. So damn convenient.

I have done tens of thousands of dollars with PayPal over the years, never an issue.
The best way to predict the future is to invent it.
It is imperative that we recognize that an opinion is not a fact. -
I have my PayPal account linked to a saving account with no money in it.
All my payments are made with a credit card.
They have refused to side with me several times when something I bought on Crime-Bay wasn't as represented. So I went directly to my credit card company and they reversed the charges. Then I notified the seller that if they want their worthless crap back all they have to do is write a pick up order with UPS and I will hand them the repackaged box.
But only after I repacked it in front of a witness and took photos of it being repackaged.
After all, it is Crime-Bay.
I think it is a little strange that PayPal has never cancelled my account. -
Outside of buying tubes on Ebay, I use Paypal for many, many other on-line retailers like Lands End, Sears, Cabella's, Crate and Barrel, ECS Tuning, etc, etc.
So I'm not buying a lot of used stuff from sellers on Ebay outside of vacuum tubes. Perhaps that's why I have had zero issues.

Yep I do pretty much the same as H9. I use paypal for lots on online venders, and I love the credit card with no interest. The only problem is it reinforces a bad habit or purchasing something before I sell the thing its replacing because I have 6 months to figure it out lol.
I also agree that if you don't use paypal credit, use a personal credit card. Chargebacks are pretty painless with major credit companies.
And I have basically never had a problem with ebay either, but I don't purchase too much any more. I have found that they almost always side with the buyer however, so I am surprised to hear @oldmodman 's experience.Living Room 2.2: Usher BE-718 "tiny dancers"; Dual DIY Dayton audio RSS210HF-4 Subs with Dayton SPA-250 amps; Arcam SA30; Musical Fidelity A308; Sony UBP-x1000es

Only problems I've ever had with PayPal are bank-related. I think they (PayPal) require (or required way back) that you link a bank account to be "verified". I used to sell a little on eBay so I had to do it. I linked my savings account. I keep no money in that account. SO, EVERY time I make a purchase and pay with PayPal, it defaults to my bank account (not my credit card). I have to physically change the payment method. When my wife uses it, she'll sometimes forget to change it. Then bam... an insufficient funds charge from PayPal, AND an overdraft charge from my bank. Fortunately, my bank (actually a credit union) is great and has always refunded their overdraft charges. Can't say the same for PayPal though... It has happened at least 3 times that I can recall in the past 15 years.
Other than that, I've never had any issues. -

You don't need to link a bank account, although they push you really hard to do so. I think there are more costs if you don't. But if you primarily buy stuff using Paypal then the costs are not an issue. There is absolutely zero chance that I would give them access to a bank account. When I do sell something it's typically not a lot of money so I leave it in the account and eventually spend it. For credit card purchases they are convenient and I have not hand any troubles with them. Actually, it's nice not to give out a credit card to every online merchant that I use.

I noticed something on a recent transaction that I didn't expect: I always use existing Paypal balance to pay for audio junk (my personal governor). But a couple weeks ago, I wanted to pay with my CC for a non-audio Paypal purchase so it wouldn't decrease my PP balance. No problems.
A week later, on the next audio transaction, I made a payment quickly and didn't realize that it maintained the same source of funds as the previous transaction. So, although I expected it would come from my PP balance by default, it took more funds from my CC. After muttering obscenities, I checked the activity. Hit only the CC but not the PP balance.
So, last source is apparently the default, not PP balance. Glad I realized it at the time, 'cause I would have been pissed if I later noticed it hitting the CC.

PP can be a bit of a pain, albeit rarely in my case. I now watch very carefully where the payment will be lodged -- cc, bank a/c, etc.

If your a youngster and using paypal to directly suck out from an account, stop. Same with using a debit card, stop. Samsung pay, Apple pay....same thing.
Why ?
Your not building your credit score. This is extremely important for you young-uns. Get yourself a credit card, put 100 bucks on it and don't pay it off at the end of the month. Make 2 or 3 payments. Get another CC, and do the same thing.
If you like to buy stuff online, cool, but use a credit card. You'll get just about the same protections and build your credit score in the process.
If your an old screwball, you probably have already built your credit score I would hope. Even so, if yours is in need of repair, don't use those services that deduct from your account, does absolutely zero for your credit score.
Just a tip from your Uncle Tony.HT SYSTEM-

I agree Tony... I have PayPal because I put my "slush fund" money into it. I get 30 bucks a check for "audio" related purchases. I tend to build it up and putting it there keeps it from sitting in the bank account, or as money available on a credit card so that its not "utilized" elsewhere without my knowledge lol..."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." Let's face it, we use Paypal because of the convenience. I use it whenever I am shopping on-line. In fact there have been times when I didn't purchase from an on-line vendor because they didn't use Paypal.
Person to person exchanges are extremely convenient with Paypal. Just like with anything else in life, occasionally there are going to be some glitches. Everyone demonizes Paypal, but honestly I have never really had any issues with using it.

Way back (15 +/- years ago) when I first opened the PayPal account, you did in-fact have to link a bank account in order to become 'verified' (required for transactions over a certain amount). Additionally, I think it was also required in order to withdraw money (since I was doing more selling than buying). I might be able to un-link it now, but haven't used it enough to think about it!
-
I closed out my PP account a few years ago after the CC I had attached to it (and I ONLY used that card for PP) got hacked and I may have had some identity theft as a result as well! That was enough for me. Done!
To reiterate, that card was used ONLY for PP. So one of the sellers on ebay must have hacked me, somehow! That does NOT inspire confidence. Also left fleabay behind as a cautionary move.
With Tony on everything else above. I'd never tie any bank account to such transactions. But it's getting harder and harder to protect oneself. Hacks at Target, hacks at Home Depot, hacks @? Apple pay, Samsung pay? Wireless transfer? MY phone to YOURS! lolCurrently orbiting Bowie's Blackstar.!

Right, let's demonize Paypal when anything and everything is susceptible to hacking these days, not just Paypal.
Just like anything in life, you need to do a risk/reward analysis and decide if you want participate in said opportunity. If you get very little reward from Ebay and using Paypal as a convenience, then you obviously can kick it to the curb and find alternate ways to those means.
Opportunities abound all around us, everyday for our personal information to be compromised.

We aren't just demonizing paypal Brock, it just so happens that was the subject matter of the thread is all.
What doesn't compute for me is, since opportunities abound today for your personal information to get hacked and your coin to disappear, why is it everyone is still so eager to jump head first into these services ? Can't say people are unaware. Or maybe it just needs to happen to some personally before they re-evaluate what they are doing.
The Target store by me has been hacked 3 times in the last 2 years. Triggering my bank to issue new debit cards every time. Now I'm thinking it may just be easier to do away with the debit cards altogether and just use the CC's instead. More protection that way anyhow.HT SYSTEM-

I am talking in general about the demonizing of Paypal, not necessarily all in this thread. Maybe if Target used Paypal they wouldn't be hacked.
You are in danger no matter what you do these days. Remember when banks used to send your checks in the mail? Talk about an easy target. What about the unscrupulous waiter who copied your credit card info while swiping your card.
Sure credit cards are somewhat safer since they generally will eat the loss, but you pay for that protection as part of the interest calculation. I know, pay it off each month and you won't incur a fee.
Bank debit cards are pretty good at eating the loss as well, but it can be a huge inconvenience.
People need to be diligent and set up strong passwords and monitor their own stuff and don't do stupid things.
I guess if you want to go around with wads of cash and checkbook like it's 1992, you certainly can. But I don't want to be behind you in line

That wouldn't be such a bad thing pal. Some fail to see the forest through the tree's if you ask me. The problem with a cashless society is many. Credit by itself could be our downfall. Unfortunately we are now at a point where we can't function without credit.
Convenient yes, but like we always do, we take things too far.
BTW...the problems with standing in line isn't cash, it's those who can't make up their frickin' minds once they get to the register.HT SYSTEM-

Tony, I worked in banking many years and the amount of bad checks written was staggering. So, whether certain people have the cash or not, they're still going get the stuff they want.
Anyway, beating head against wall.........I'm out of this one as it has taken on a life of its own.
Bottom line, it's a huge convenience and I'm going to take the convenient route every time.
