Car Speakers as In-wall Speakers?
I'm as new as they come!
..but here goes...
I was recently given a pair of Car Stereo speakers (Polk db525). I really don't have a need for them in my car, but thought that they may make great in-wall speakers.
So, for a simple (2 channel) stereo, is there any reason good or bad that I couldn't or shouldn't mount these speakers and hook them up to a standard Stereo Amp?
As an aside, I once tried to use Cat5 cable as speaker cable. Thought it would make multiple wire-drops easier (4-pairs). It works of course, but even I (non-audiophile) could hear the lack of range.

I have thought about that before, no real problem that I see.
A couple of things to think about:
the car speakers are most likely 4 ohm, so be sure you amp can drive that.
The grills may not be the best lookingDodd - Battery Preamp
Monarchy Audio SE100 Delux - mono power amps
Sony DVP-NS999ES - SACD player
ADS 1230 - Polk SDA 2B
DIY Stereo Subwoofer towers w/(4) 12 drivers each
Crown K1 - Subwoofer amp
Outlaw ICBM - crossover
Beringher BFD - sub eq
Where is the remote? Where is the $%#$% remote!

Yeah, the wife will probably veto the "look" of car speaker grills. They are ugly. I'm thinking in the garage anyway. This was more of a "can it be done" question.
I will have to check whether the speakers are 4-Ohm or not. I know it will say on the back, but how do I check the amp? Will it say on the back? BTW - It is an older TEAC.
Thanks for the reply! -
Just check the back of the amp at the speaker outputs it should say "something" 8-16 or 4-8 or 8 ohm only. Most amps can handle 4 ohms, might get a little warmer than if they were 8 ohm.Dodd - Battery Preamp

Which receiver is it ?
-
It is a TEAC AG-1000.
Probably 10 years old.
I think it is 100W per channel. On the back it says "8ohm min". Does that mean it is not good for 4 ohm speakers? How about higher? -
for your use in a garage rig (assuming your not trying to get concert levels, I still think you will be fine.Dodd - Battery Preamp

No......
Garage Parkish
I don't see anything wrong with it...
Although bass would be at a min...
Unless you plan to put it in some kind of box and not just mounting it on the wall or something...lol
Are you going to just set the driver on the table, plug em up and let em rip?- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
It IS trailer parkish! That's the beauty of it...
Here's my thought though:
1 - Cost - Anyone that says cost isn't an issue is lying. Why are car speakers cheaper than in-walls? At least on the lower-end. Besides, I've already got some...
2 - I'm really not looking for the concert hall experience. Just something to listen to while in the garage. (and no, I don't have a dart board and pool table in the garage...:p ) I've got an old receiver that may as well be used. I think this would sound better than a "boom-box". Would it?
3 - Profile - Other than the grill, car speakers are lower profile. They seem to have a greater variety to choose from when it comes to size. In-walls are actually bigger and uglier from that standpoint. I can't find any small ones. In-walls are a marketers dream, they justify high cost. Asthetically, I can easily just have small round black grills. I've seen some living rooms with some pretty frightening speakers all over the place.
4 - Quality - This is where this forum comes in. I really don't know much about this stuff. Will the base suffer with Car speakers built in vs In-walls? I don't know. If someone just said here that it was a bad idea and would sound aweful etc... that would outweigh my percieved advantages easily. I've always heard that the wall is a bad place to put any speaker unless a box is built anyway. Wouldn't an in-wall suffer the same challenge as a car speaker? They're both built with that challenge in mind, right?
I would love to hear arguments to my theories. I may just have no idea.
