What happens to calibration microphones???

So I've been looking for a receiver on Craigslist. I found a few promising ones, but none of them, without fail, have their calibration mic. Do people throw them out after setting up their system? Do they languish lost in junk drawers? Do they go wherever missing socks go? How big a deal is it to get a new one? Can I just buy one of the same brand on eBay, or do different models need matching mics?

I've never thrown any out. Remember though on some receivers like my Denon 3805 you had to pony up 100$ to get the calibration mic. So keep that in mind. I believe that the 3808 denons started including the mic.

The receivers I'm looking at are fairly recent - Denon 3313ci, 1912, Yamaha RX-A840 or 1040 - so you would think the included accessories would still be there...

There was a very nice upper Denon here for sale. I believe it was a 4000 20 series hit up the FS area if it in your budget and still for sale

I would imagine either lost (junk drawer/bin, thrown away with original box on accident, etc) or never had one to begin with for whatever reason.

Yeah, you can buy them off fleabay, or call the manufacturer for one. Really though, if you have a good ear it's not all that necessary. You make those adjustments yourself while sitting in your listening position. Even with the mic, you still may have to tweek the settings anyway.

Agree with Tony... Calibration is a good baseline though.... 2 good ears works better than 1.
