I have never heard SACD or DVD-a. How does the quality of either of these formats compare to the sound quality of just regular DVD's? If you had the same recording in all three formats, would the quality be the same for all three? If the SACD's and DVD-a's are of higher quality than just DVD's, is the difference significant?

Well I don't know yet...but I'm picking up a Pioneer 563 DVD player this weekend to find out...

I currently have a DVD DTS 5.1 audio disc (actually a few of them) and am told the quality is not as good as DVD-A or SACD. Basically I have audio in 5.1, but none of the track are high resolution, or so I'm told.

Well actually jd45177, I think that you are compareing apples and oranges. You should be compareing SACDs and DVD-As with vinyl albums and CDs because that is what SACDs and DVD-As are; these new high resolution digital formats are an audio based storage medium that holds the content of an album or a CD. I personally think that you should check out SACDs and DVD-As because not only do these formats offer a higher quality sound of your favorite albums or CDs, but they sometimes offer surround sound mixes of the old titles. This is always a fun way to breath new life into a favorite album.

When I first heard DSOTM on SACD I was totally blown away. The discs have higher sampling and bit rate which helps improve the dynamics when listening to the recording. Now how you will like it depends on you, I have found myself moving back to 2 ch, don't get me wrong, their are times when I really enjoy the surround mixes of my dvd-a and sacd discs. There are differences in the formats you will need to read up on, my Rumours DVD-A has a Stereo high resolution option that is awesome and fun to compare to the surround mix, I was just doing this last night while listening to "The Chain" on of my favorite tunes. Enjoy:cool:

I would just like to say one more thing to JD45177; you are not ingorant, it is not the public's fault that a lot of people have mis-conceptions about SACD and DVD-A, it is the manufactuers fault. The companies that make and sell the hardware and software for high resolution audio are doing a very bad job of communicateing the benifits of high-rez audio to the public. Sony has spent a little bit of money on promoting SACD, but there needs to be a concentrated effort by the companies involved in hypeing up the benifits of high-rez audio.
