Custom project: combine RT2000i & RT55i
Hello guys, new to the forum but not to Polk products.
Last year I had the chance to get a broken set of RT2000is for free. A friend of mine was moving and his wife made him get rid of them. Over the past few months I've been doing a complete restoration on them: had both amps sent out for service, replaced all the bad drivers (it was not easy finding replacements), checked all wiring, sanded/repainted both cabinets, and got rid of the crap vinyl that always peels. The outcome was fantastic, both speakers look and sound like new.
Now to my question, I have the chance to pick up a pair of RT55is for practically nothing. The cabinets are in very rough shape, probably not salvageable. So I had the idea of modifying the RT2000i cabinets and using the dual drivers from the RT55is in place of the single that comes with the 2000i. Does anyone know what would be involved here? I don’t know much about the crossovers in either speaker. I’m sure somebody has attempted this before.

Welcome to the forum
Short answer is don't
You'd be getting in way over your head essentially designing and building an all new speaker. Rebuild the 55i's and use them for surrounds. -
Ummmm yeah, that's a really bad idea.Political Correctness'.........defined

Yep, agreed....bad idea. Don't waste your time, money, or efforts. Instead sell both and buy some RTIA9's, put a separate amp on them and move on to bigger and better things.HT SYSTEM-

Okay, that's what I figured. Just thought I'd explore it because I paid practically nothing for the components

I hear ya, but if you want to make use of them, build another set of bookies with them.....or sell the parts for cash.HT SYSTEM-

Yep that's a great deal. If you are getting them real cheap, even with shipping that might work out nicely!Living Room 2.2: Usher BE-718 "tiny dancers"; Dual DIY Dayton audio RSS210HF-4 Subs with Dayton SPA-250 amps; Arcam SA30; Musical Fidelity A308; Sony UBP-x1000es
