My new TT and cart finally arrived today...

Music Hall 5.3SE with Soundsmith Carmen. Got her all set up and am listening to some vinyl. Sure looks and sounds purdy..

I decided on the Soundsmith after spending about 20 hours reading cart reviews and write ups on Moving Iron cartridge Theory.

The combination seems to be very nice together as I have never heard a cartridge this nice... I don't claim to be some TT/Cart guru but with the Budgie this TT and Cart I am in vinyl heaven.

Cart is very quiet and delivers very accurate SQ with sweet vocals... Plenty of thump and no sizzle on the cymbals.

The plinth is beautiful.

    What made you decide to stick with Music Hall instead of trying a VPI or Clearaudio?

    you know that is a great question..what TT people lean towards. after my Pro-Ject Carbon I got a Pro-Ject Xeperience Classic... seems many do this!

    Don't misunderstand me or anything, the Music Hall is a fine choice - I don't think there are any bad choices in that price range to be sure. I'm just curious why you stuck with what you had instead of trying something else.

    I was very happy with the 5.1... first TT I ever had that wasn't a POS... Except for maybe my Philips GA 312 back in the 70's. When it comes to mechanical things, I like simple... The Pro-Ject tonearm to me is very simple and easy for me to understand. The dual plinth design and suspension on the Music Hall works and presents no feedback or resonance issues. I hated having to tip toe around my 70's TT's. I can literally jump with led boots in front of this thing... When I decided to go with the Soundsmith cart, I was bugged by the fact that I didn't buy the SE version when I bought the 5.1. When I talked to Needle Dr. guy they made me a nice deal on the 5.3SE's std. Ortofon 2m Bronze. After that it just came down to fuggit ship it to me :smiley:

    Would love to have a VPI but I want a Classic and by the time I moved up to that I would have spent another $5K with a suitable cart....

    That's my story and I'm stickin to it!

    Nice deck for sure! Good choice on going with a moving iron cart also! I have way too many cartridges as I think I have a serious addiction with them! :-) Anyways to make a long story short, I have mm carts, mi carts, homc carts, and lomc carts and the mi carts are consistently among my favs. In fact the Cartridge Man Music Maker 3 mi cart is my very favorite. It has all of the advantages of a good lomc with the sweetness of a good mm. Don't believe the hype that only lomc carts are true hi-fi, I've heard plenty of mi and mm carts that are easily just as good. Anyways, congrats on your sweet set-up. She's really purdy!

    Good looking table Mike, I've had a SoundSmith Zephyr for three years now, no telling how many hours it has on it as I spin some Vinyl every day, and it still sounds great.

    One thing about the SoundSmith cartridges, when they do get past their prime you can send them back to SS for a re-tip at a modest cost.

    Nice choice Mikey good decision, on both the table and the celebration beer enjoy. So did you try the ortofon bronze at all, just curious how that and the one you got compare.

    Looks like your plinth material is a tad thicker with more separation (I bet it's a better grade absorption material). Would love to hear that MI cart! Again, congrats!

    Been putting some hours on this TT and the Soundsmith cart...This cart is amazing compared to MM's i have heard and used.... I have had Sonus, Grado and Ortofon not necessarily in this price performance range...very quiet and responsive... I like the idea that I can listen to some very dynamic classical and jazz vinyl and get wowed by the silent passages and knocked back by the intense parts. I know I did about 20 hrs of research and conversation with the needle dr. but is there a way anymore to go hear a cart to be able to help decide? I guess if I was in Minneapolis area ??? How do you approach deciding on a cart.. This will be the last one for me for a while. :smiley:

    I did not try the 2m Bronze as I wanted to get the trade in value of it with Needle Dr.
