Dynamat and Turntables

I cracked open my TT hoping to line the inside with Dynamat. Well, that is not going to happen. I had no clue how many gears, levers, etc were involved in a fully automatic TT. I swear to you it looked like a plastic version of this

Anyhow the question is since I am not going to put any on the inside due to the complexity and no room situation would there be any benefit to putting Dynamat on the outside of the TT on the bottom?

I understand I can't touch the platter with the stuff because it is finely balanced. Side note the aluminum platter rings like crazy, for a good 60 seconds plus if you hit it just right. I'm sure that's why the stock Yamaha mat is made from rubber.

Does any of this matter being that the case of the TT (plinth? is that correct?) is made of thick plastic? Does plastic even resonate or is the point of Dynamat on a TT purely to add mass?

Take something like a small screwdriver handle to tap with on the underside of your table in areas that are void of anything to determine if it resonates at all through your speakers while the cartridge is live. If the table is as full as you claim, you might not have much to worry about as any attachment point usually deadens the piece by combining mass.

The platter usually isn't an issue ringing if your mat is soft enough to damp the ringing of the platter. Tap along the edge of the platter with the mat and an album in place to determine if there is enough resonance to worry about. I usually find that the dust cover is the biggest source of resonance with most tables. Many run without the cover when listening to music loud enough to vibrate the cover.

What model Yamaha is it? I have always fancied the PX-3 linear model and PF 800 models of that brand, but never run into either along the way.

  • We used to press moretite rope caulking to the insides of plastic turntables. Moretite might work better for you as it presses out much thinner than the dynamat.

I have heard of folks using modeling clay to add mass and reduce resonance. That's why I like some of the old Pioneers as the plinth was solid piece of mdf a nice word for particle board :)

I just did my sl1700 under the plinth. Mostly under the tonearm area as it rang badly there. Stopped the ringing there imediatly.
