Vinyl Question - Effects of Off Center Pressing; Warbling?

Hey guys,
I picked up that War on Drugs "Lost In The Dream" album on vinyl. I thought I was imagining things the other night when I thought I heard some uncomfortable distortion on some of the tracks. At first I thought it was a system issue, but then other albums were okay, so I went searching just out of curiosity, and it turns out that there's been some discussion about this on this particular album over on SteveHoffman re: that distortion.
So here's another thing I've been noticing sometimes - the tonearm seems to wander back and forth on some albums. I read the other night about off-center pressings. It does it the worst I've seen yet on this WOD album, and audibly, I'm hearing some warbling, almost as if the speed is off, like it's speeding up and slowing down. Can that be an effect off an off-center pressing?

I know I have gotten some bad vinyl where distortion was crazy. U2 Joshua tre 180g was one of them. In the 80's I got a lot of bad pressing.Klipsch The Nines, Audioquest Thunderbird Interconnect, Innuos Zen MK3 W4S recovery, Revolution Audio Labs USB & Ethernet, Border Patrol SE-I, Audioquest Niagara 5000 & Thunder, Cullen Crossover II PC's.

Jeez, really? This is common? I had no idea.
It's just about unlistenable in some parts.
So what do you do? Return it and try again somewhere else?I disabled signatures. -
Defects in new vinyl are more common than you'd think. Ask the store that you're buying from about their return policy on such issues. If they have turntables setup so that you can listen to used vinyl on them, open up your new records immediately after purchasing them and play them on the spot.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

I also have found albums with similar issues in past. I buy new from our local Bull Moose & anytime i have a issue they take great care of me. I had a issue recently on a brand new Tool album. I called them up & i didnt have to bring it in till new one arrived. It pays to get to know who you buy new albums with..
