Speaker Stand

Does anyone have experience with this stand?
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/ultimate-support-ms-90-36-studio-monitor-stand-36--pair

Setting up my first 2 channel system since 1990 and did not realize how difficult it would be selecting speaker stands. They will be supporting LSI 7s.

TIA

At 36" tall they are too tall for your speakers. You want the tweeter to be at ear height, generally between 38" to 40".

Take a look at Skylan, http://www.skylanstands.com/stands.htm or perhaps the Target stands available at Music Direct.

Thanks F1 and the wife and I really like your shirt.

I measured my ear height sitting kicked back in my office desk chair at 44". The height of the tweeter on the 7's is 10" plus the 36" stand height equates to a total tweeter height of 46" vs 44" ear height. Not sure I could get this any closer but will double check my measurements to make sure.

Is your chair high or are you just tall?

Don't forget to include the height of the spikes and decoupling pads.

It's your typical adjustable desk chair which could be lowered during listening sessions. Probably will be more comfortable also. Did not know the spikes were not already included in the height measurements and just overlooked the dc pads.

I will bottom out the chair and take some more measurements. Probably can use a 30" stand.

Do you have any recommendations on stands?

I'll second the Skylan if you can make them work for you. I'm listening from a couch that reclines. I have the 27" for my LSiM703's and the stands are very sturdy after filling them. I think it cost me around $240(US) shipped.

Directions that he gave me to fill: Start with kitty litter then the last 10" PlaySand (found some inside Home Depot that was nice and dry).

Sorry, I was joking about the chair and your height. If your normal seated ear height is 44" then that's what it is.

I'm not familiar with those stands, so you need to check if the spikes and pads are included in the height measurement. Usually, they are not.

Skylan's tallest stand is 27", so will have to check tonight if this will work. Also noticed they mention the top plate comes in different sizes which leads me to another question: If you get the top plate to fit your current speakers, what would one do when the upgrade bug hits? Is there a magical top plate dimension that would fit most bookies?

Call Noel, the owner of Skylan to ask about a taller stand. He doesn't like to do that because he has to make a different shipping box, but if you're really nice he just might.

If you had Skylan stands you could have a new top plate made. Other than that, just put your new speakers on the stands.

I'm not aware of a standard top plate size.

What is the dimensions of the top plate for the 703's?
  • @footwedge

You know... I told Noel that I was ordering them for my 703's but I didn't specify to make the top plate custom for the 703's. So I'm not sure if they are the standard or custom.

They definitely taper towards the back like the 703 profile and the speakers just fit on top.

The dimensions of the top plate on mine are:

    Front Width: 7 7/8"
    Back Width: 7"
Length front to back (tapered): 12"

That make sense since my speakers sit perfectly on them.

    Thumbs up to Noel!

    Indeed!

Another great thing with Skylan, if down the road you need a different size top plate, bottom plate or column height Noel will provide them.

I will keep that mind for the future as well!

They are nice stands once filled and spiked....very sturdy.

I have a pair of those Ultimate Support stand, they are really nice. Mine are a dark reddish color. They can easily be cut with a hacksaw to whatever height you want given the way they are assembled. You can fill them with sand or shot also. I couldn't find anything close at that price, and they are really a lot more than you expect for the price. I highly recommend.

Thanks for the insight. What bookies do you have sitting on these stands? Did you actually shorten yours and which end did you remove? Still debating between this one and the skylan. Did not realize it would be so difficult finding stands.

I have Polk LSiM 703 on them. It is a seriously substantial stand. I haven't cut mine down yet as they are only a few inches too high for my application, and I'm lazy. :)

It's not, you just have to look in the right places, Europe.

Wow. I guess you just need to know where to look. Scared to quote the shipping cost. Thanks for the links.

Think I've decided on the skylan and will be giving Noel a call tomorrow.

I was ready to order some stands from Liedtke, but found some Sanus Ultimate Foundations the very same day. IIRC the shipping quote from Germany was $90.00, which I thought was very reasonable.
