Compact power conditioners, what do you have?

I've been exploring the world of compact power conditioners that are available in Canada that don't cost an arm and a leg. I wanted to add one before my Nordost q base, I also wanted something small, that won't take up a huge chunk of realstate in my rack.

I came across a furman AC 215A on my local kijiji new in box for 140$ bucks. Went and picked it up and what do ya know this guy had a HUGE system, focal electras, bryston, a crazy system. Ended up picking this little gem up for 120 bucks, tape wasn't even broken on the box.

I don't have any problems with my sound, but have had this hooked up for about a day, and I am really surprised what I found, lower noise floor, dead quiet. And everything seems way smoother. I can't quite explain it.

A buddy of mine has a surplus of military grade stranded 10gauge silver coated wire, so he made me a power cord to go to the furman. Braided, shielded with furutech connectors. I am pleased! And was free! Best 120$ bucks I have spent in a while!

What do you have?

    Here's some eye candy.

I also realize this is only rated to handle 10amps. My pre amp, CDP, and TT will be the only thing hooked to this, and I seriously doubt those combined will ever hit 10 amps.

I take it you've never seen the PS Audio Dectet, Shunyata Venom, the picture of the Furman right above you?

  • PS Audio Detect, is what I have.

It's thin, and fits into the rack taking up very little space. They also make a 15 amp version.

I have one of the AC 215A as well for my alarm system. Surges love to go over low voltage wires and I can't afford to redo the built in alarm system if there is an issue. I'm likely buying another one or two for other rooms if I can find them for the right price again (under 100).

I had a Furma PL Plus Series II that did a good job too. And then the non small APC H15s..

The AC 215A supposedly has the features of the PL series. It's a feature packed little box. Under a 100 is a steal.

Bill Whitlock thinks that a good power conditioner needs to be the size of a refrigerator.

Power-line filters in “conditioners” only begin to work at frequencies over about 40
kHz … but these frequencies do not cause either common-impedance coupling in
unbalanced cables or common-mode voltages at balanced inputs, provided that cables
with normal coaxial shielding is used in either case. Power-line filtering, unless the
filter starts working at a few hundred Hz (which would make it the size of a
    refrigerator)
, are useless in the reduction of hum and buzz ... duh!

  • I used to be under the false sense that only those that lived in old houses or inconsistence power areas needed line conditioner. Not until I had an issue with my 2 channel setup sharing the same line as the kitchen. I was getting popping noise from the microwave and frig. After getting a Paramax 500 dbs (sister units with Furman) I was sold, Not only did it solved my issues but also created a cleaner noise level (deeper blacks) and help tighten up the bass. I have a line conditioner on the HT setup, and Master bedroom also.

I use the Furman AC215 ( no A) for my headphone rig at the office. I work for a software company, so there are massive numbers of computers and other electronics. Background is dead quiet. Extremely happy with it.
