What format -- cassette, reel to reel (half- or quarter-track), 8-track, Elcaset...?

Depends on how one looks at it, I guess.

I thought they were about $1600 when they came out; these guys say $2499... and there's been some inflation in in the intervening few decades...

    I have a Pioneer CT6 auto reverse

Denon DRR-780 which is a horizontal tray load so that it is low profile and just kind of cool and auto-reverse

    I think I still have a Denon DRM-700A 3-head deck too.

  • Here is a thread about Mr. Kobayashi, the Nakamichi engineer of the Dragon:

    http://www.tapeheads.net/showthread.php?t=46202&page=2

The thread begins on page 2 and works its way "forward" t page 1.
  • I have an auto reverse Yamaha KX-400U 2 head cassette deck for $50 shipped and a Nakamichi CR-1A 2 head deck for $75 shipped. The only issue is that the tape counter on the Yamaha doesn't work. Both sound excellent using factory recorded tapes.

I also have an Optonica RT-6205 for $30 shipped. This deck needs a pinch roller for the FF and RW functions.

Kenneth, thanks for the interesting article. Never owned a Dragon but had quite a few Nakamichi's back in the day, preferred their sound for taping exclusively to any other (never played prerecorded tapes) but their reliability generally left much to be desired. I just cannot personally imagine shelling out twelve hungy for a cassette deck at this time.

Ken, thanks for sharing the Dragon link (in all seriousness). I shall peruse anon.

Wasn't Kobayashi the unsolvable game in Star Trek that Captain Kirk "cheated" on and Spock never played until the end of "The Wrath Of Khan"?
  • I always coveted the Nakamichi car cassette deck, myself. The loading tray would come forward and you'd place the tape on the transport. It would adjust the playback alignment for best frequency response and channel balance. Combine this with one of the ADS amplifiers and a pair of Polk mini-monitors mounted on the rear deck and audio bliss.

    Enter the Dragon? Someday, perhaps!

I tossed all my cassette decks in the garbage years ago. All in perfect working order at that.

I saw a Pioneer CT-W604RS at the local Good Will that I have been resisting the urge to buy. The only reason I would want it is that it has Dolby S. However, I have a beautiful Denon DRM-800A that rarely gets played. So I have a hard time justifying buying another deck.

Your resistance to temptation is prudent.

Y'all'd laugh at the cassette deck I have on-line (i.e., compared to the ones that are just gathering dust).

I use it, occasionally, to record FM radio programming :-/ I need simple and reliable for that, so I use a "BPC" ("black plastic cr@p") dual-well Optimus-branded (Pioneer OEM) deck that I found -- well, you know where I found it :- )

When I snagged my Denon DRM-800A off ebay a few years ago it was still in the original foam wrap which had deteriorated and was stuck to the cabinet. Apparently a church had bought it new for a sound system back in 1991 and never took it out of the box.

I always try to keep the factory boxes and packing material for all my gear if possible.
    Even my Polk speakers:

It comes in handy for storage or if you move. It is also nice if you ever need to send equipment in for service or to ship it in after selling it.
