REL or Sunfire Subrosa

Looking for a musical sub to round out my HT setup. It won't be used for two channel, but will be used for concert video and movies. What would be the best option. The Subrosa can go inside the wall. The REL would have to be outside, and thus take up useful floor space. Both are the same cost-wise. Any input will be helpful.

For HT I'd look at SVS, for music REL or Velodyne.

SVS is good stuff for sure, but I do prefer musicality over anything else

Your opening post said "a musical sub to round out my HT setup". I'd seriously look to SVS, both for HT and musical. They've come a long way in bridging the gap. Some nice deals in their outlet store as well...

I love my Velodyne SPL sub. Very musical and provides plenty of bass for HT.

Personally, I will only own a sealed sub.

The drivers in the higher end Velodyne stuff are crazy nice. Great excursion, huge magnets and motor structures...

However, I think the plate amp on my SPL just bit the dust...

Sorry I can't speak to the two subs in contention.

I agree that SVS is underrated for "musicality." distortion is low, excursion and recovery is quick, port noise is low to non-existent, frequency is pretty damn-near linear, hard to see what's not "musical" about it.

Having said that, I have owned a sealed bipolar Mirage BPS-150i, and an ACI force, and the force in particular is just insane. It VERY easily could just disappear, even when crossed over too high for an "audiophile" setup. It was extremely fast (I like to listen to pino palladino's bass lines on the john mayer trio live albums - the dude is INSANE), and the thing that really got me was the TEXTURE. the differences between an electric fretted, fretless, acoustic, and upright bass were all very clear. And even acoustic guitar just had so much resonance, vibration, and texture down low. I really regret selling my last one, but alas it just doesn't work in my setup...

So I guess I am saying i do think some subs are more musical. I also do think that the basic HSUs are a bit more musical as well, I think due to the fact that they do not rely on fancy EQs or limiters, just a really solid driver in the right size box with good clean power, and let it play natural. So I might actually try one of those on for size in the OPs position.

Just checked out some info on the G-2, depending on what size room and how his system was dialed in,or acoustic treatments used. I did see that this sub has a single 10" caarbon fibre driver powered by a 450 watt amp with impressive filters circuitry. Whether that's enough bass to fill a decent size room or not is the question. Incidently, the sub does_ look absolutely beautiful. I don't know what the price of this baby is, maybe others who have this model or have also heard it can chime in.

Exactly. Everytime I hear the myth of SVS not being all that great for music, I wonder if the comment is coming from first hand knowledge. SVS distortion is extremely low; I've never had any cabinet resonances/anomalies/port noise, etc; and I have a "budget version" PB12-NSD backing some Harbeth monitors. My particular model has minimal settings, yet blends wonderfully and has more than enough power for my large listening area. No muddiness, no boom, no thick lower-midrange **** up my 7ES-3's voicing.

...and while we're "myth busting" that hogwash about ported subs not being "good for music" is just that----hogwash. It's an internet "audiophile" wives tale that gets repeated over & over again; likely by people running a $200 subwoofer.

John, the subrosa is nice, but pricey since you do need the corresponding amp with it.

If it was me I'd look at a infinite baffle setup since IIRC you have a LOT of open space in your ceiling. The drivers for that application tend to be fairly inexpensive and with 4 or more of them you need very little power total to dig really deep and sound really good.

Bonus is they will be hidden in the ceiling so they take up no floor space, and dont mess with your interior walls either.....

Yes, I agree....given you just built your man cave, 4 IB subs would be sweet. Maybe 4 of these Fi Audio IB318 18" subs for $1096 (On sale for $274 each)
    http://www.ficaraudio.com/product/ib3-series-ib318/

These things have 3″ 2 or 4 layer voice coils and 30mm of Xmax!
    fiib318_765.jpg

Then get a pro amp of choice for power...maybe something like this 1900 watt Buttkicker BKA1000-N amp for $340 http://www.fullcompass.com/prod/192169-ButtKicker-BKA1000-N

...and maybe some miniDSP https://www.minidsp.com/ for tuning if you system does not have it for the bass.

Can do 135db at 20Hz. Flat response to 8Hz. http://www.blu-ray.com/community/gallery.php?member=bdlitzer
