Yamaha receiver.....which one?

Still looking for an AVR for my RTiA5 and CSiA4
My current receiver is a Pioneer VSX920....One will say upgrading won't be difficult !!!
I was thinking first at Marantz, but read that the Yamaha Aventage series were real good.
I'm running 3.1 so far, planning to go 5.1 but doubt I will go more than that....
I NEED video upscaling for my daughter's PS2 and Wii
Which one would you recommend for a budget around $600? I'm thinking buying from A4L
Thanks
RTiA5 + CSiA4 + Jamo SW410E
Yamaha TSR-700 (equivalent to RX V6A)

Original MSRP $2k 150 watts x 2 @ 8 ohms - obviously that will drop as you add speakers but for an AVR still very good.

If you want to spend less a forum member is selling an RX-A1000 for $300

I was just looking at the rx-a2010 on A4L for $549.99....What are the differences with the 3010? Is it worth the $50 increase?

Are you planning on using the preouts with an external amp? If yes then buy the cheaper one.
I say get the Yamaha in the FM and Dabutcher has a BK 5 ch amp for 250 shipping. Get those two and you're golden and under budget.
  • I've always read that the RTiA5 were not difficult to drive, thus an amp should not be required, right?

While this is true, they will sound that much better. I have the rti8 with an rxa1010 hooked up to a rotel and the sound difference is night and day. An amp gives you more headroom. Like bigger lungs for that extra push you might need.
  • Is the Rx-a1000 a much lower end unit compared to the rx-a3010?
    Will rx-a1000 + B&KAV5000 be a better system than the rx-a3010 alone?

Either one of those receivers will drive your speakers on their own pretty well. I wouldn't add the amp unless you plan on going higher up the chain in speakers anytime soon.

Which you can always add later, as both have preouts.

+1, Tony. Get whichever Aventage model fits the budget and has pre-outs. Those Rti-As, are indeed easier to drive and you can use the coin you save for other things. As Tony says you can always add more later!

  • OK, looking at A4L, which receiver would you recommend in the $500 to $600 knowing I need upscaling and a good calibration system?

I'd say Nightfall's got the pick for Yamaha the A3010.

You might also want to look at the Marantz SR 7007. Although it looks like the Yammie has more power? Marantz units also sound darn good!

Most AVRs have been doing auto-calibration now for well over a decade so how "bad" can any one be? And you can always use an SPL meter and your ears! Not a deal breaker there.

Upconversion, just about everything does that including HDTVs? I think you're worried about things that aren't that relevant on NEW models.

  • The 10xx and higher are very good, but the 20xx and 30xx have additional channels if you need them.

  • How would you compare the Marantz SR7007 with the Yamaha RX-A3010?

  • The Yamaha's are very reliable. Not that the Marantz isn't, but the Yamaha Aventage are getting a great reputation for it.

The RX-V line is bright as the sun. The RX-A10xx and up I would call more on the warm side of neutral, still not as warm as Marantz though. If that's your thing you should go for a Marantz.
