Anyone familiar with shanling?

As some may know I picked up a Marantz cd6005, I spent all day with it yesterday, and the player has been on continuously for 3 days. I do like this player, it has really opened up, but I'm not totally blown away by this thing. I find this player very nice to listen to at moderate volumes, but if I want to turn it up some, the highs become very fatiguing. I think I'm going to return it.

I have tried several pairs of interconnects, audioquest, ultra link, nordost, and MIT. My benchmark dac 2 has a laid back nature, and I can listen to my digital collection for hours at high volumes without fatigue.

A friend of mine has a shanling t1000se for sale, I've Listened to it at his house and has left me very impressed. He has upgraded to a jolida, hence the sale. As some may know this is a gorgeous player!

I have about 30 days to return in to Best Buy, I'm going to give it more time. And I have an after market power cord on the way, see what difference it will make.

Suggestions?

    I owned one for awhile and passed it along to another forum member (maybe he still has it?) - together with some Bendix Red Bank tubes - when I bought my Wadia 301. IIRC, I also upgraded the opamps in it. I'd recommend it.

    My buddy has already upgraded the op amps in this unit. I haven't asked him about tubes.

    I believe I still have a pair of the Bendix tubes squirreled away.

    Here's the original sale thread. Hell, I may have two sets of the Bendix tubes! Can't recall if Trey ever bought a pair, though it seems like he did. Old timer's disease.

    Pretty sure I'm going to pull the trigger on this. Hopefully will be selling my lsim 705's on Tuesday to cover this. If the guy shows up and buys them!

    Hey Mike! Kewl tubes! Did you know MU Engineering bought the Red Bank division, rebranded existing stock and continued to manufacture tubes with the Red Bank tooling? Several years ago, MU tubes were a steal price wise before folks caught on.

    Hi Rich,

    Did not know about MU Engineering's role in keeping the Redbank quality alive. I did do quite a bit of research on the 6385's and knew they were for ICBM use pre-transistor. It took me awhile to find/purchase two pair. Guess I should go look in my tube box someday and see what's in there.

    Returning the Marantz today. Pulled the trigger on the shanling, I'm pretty pumped about this! Now I'm looking at replacing the Chinese tubes. Anyone familiar with 5670W GE 5670? I will try it out with stock tubes for a while, then look for something better to "roll" in :smiley:

    The ge look to be a nice cheap alternative. Those bendex tubes go anywhere from 75-100 bucks that I've seen. Yikes!

    Can't recall trying the 5670's, perhaps I did, but the Western Electric 396A & 2C51's were both good tubes. The Redbanks are just dead black quiet in operation and, as Rich stated, nearly impervious to microphonics.

    I'm gonna' have to pull the tube box out of the closet to see if I have anything left that fits that player.

    BTW - Is your new Shanling the later model that supports SACD?

    I may have to get my hands on these red banks (if I can find any) after I test drive the stock tubes for a bit. This does play sacd, which is good as I have a few of them. Almost moved my 105 to the basement, but I think this will be a better fit.

    I have a feeling this tubes idea will be trouble.

    Thanks skip, it will be in my possession on Monday, and I can't wait to get my hands on it. The Marantz was nice, it just wasn't doing it for me after some time with it, but for the price was a great player, with nice features.

    Kind of funny when I returned it to best buy they asked what's wrong with it. I said I didn't like it, and the girl said why? It's a Marantz... Did you get it professionally installed? Maybe that's why you didn't like it. Lol!

    Maybe we will have to talk about these if you are willing to let them go. A friend of mine had the parts connexion modded t100 and has a pair of western electrics he will give me for free to try out.

    They were a spare matching pair and (from the looks of no deoxit love on the pins) I doubt I ever had them in the Shanling.

    Enjoy your new player (those WE's are solid for sure), do some further research, then let me know. I'm confident we can work something out if you want to give them a go.

    It arrived at work today, triple boxed, and in perfect condition. Been hooked up for about an hour... Now this is what it should sound like, detailed, huge sound stage, silky smooth, just fantastic. Dam this is good. Will be swapping some tubes this weekend after I spend this week with it.

    Unpacking this thing was pure joy and excitement. I don't know why this one in particular was so friggen exciting.
