That stuff will give you a headache pronto if not the next morning. If you like your guests, I'd advise against it. If you hate them, buy it by the case.

Obviously you don't serve the better wines to guests who won't appreciate it. That's where the 10-15 buck bottles come into play. You can still get decent stuff in that price range for those whose palette still rests in KFC territory.

This is exactly why I got out of wine. Several years ago I lived with a gal. We both enjoyed cooking and wine. It started with the $8-$10 stuff then went off from there. Next thing I know we would enjoy a good bottle of wine at a restaurant and I would order 1/2-full cases costing hundreds into the thousands of dollars.

Those cooking at home nights: get home pop a $20 bottle throw on some tunes, start dinner pop a 2nd $40-$100+ bottle plus the dinner $50 (seafood/steak etc) 2X-3X a week plus a couple dinners out, sexy lingerie for her and hell next thing I know we were spending $2-3k a month....and just think it all started with the gateway $8 bottle

    Stuff is addicting

Now I'm married and my wife has no interest in wine but I grab a bottle of some good stuff at our dinner outs.

Wine is also something better enjoyed with others with the same interest.

Ah.....we have some things in common then. All started that way for me too, but growing up Italian wine was never a stranger. Before you knew it I was having cases of reserve wine shipped from Napa, 100+ buck bottles, as the wife and I both enjoy it. Before you knew it, I had memberships at 4 wineries and was spending more than my mortgage a month on wine. On top of that, we both smoke and between us adds up to 12 cartons a month at 70 bucks a carton here. Do the math....840 bucks a month.

Where is all our money going ? Yeah....you know it. So now I roll our own smokes at 10 bucks a carton and buy bargain wines, save the good stuff for special occasions and holidays. The smokes alone save me 700 a month, that's not chump change. That would pay for a Benz if I wanted to. Probably saved another 1k a month on the wine too.

It's nice to be able to afford the good stuff, but most of us can't in reality aside from those special occasions. There are plenty good wines in the budget prices though that won't send you into the poor house. Bad thing is, your taste buds have adjusted to the good stuff and anything less becomes just so-so.

I also stopped ordering wine at restaurants when we go out and instead bring my own and pay the 5 buck corkage fee. That alone saves me 100-200 on the dinner bill. They usually mark up the wine 3 times retail plus your tipping 20% on top of that.
