I just recently upgraded to Digital Cable/HDTV (Time Warner Cable) and was considering buying a Toshiba 34HF83 High Def. TV.
My question is how will the regular TV shows that are not broadcast in HD show on this TV screen? I was told that they are not very clear (grainey) and that any words displayed are a little fuzzy. Can anyone clear this up?
Thanks

I think it depends on the particular TV, but some HDTV's will improve the look of regular (non-HD) broadcast TV. I was in Best Buy one time on my lunch break and happened upon a salesman who really knew his stuff about HDTV. (I know it's rare in Best Buy to run into anyone who really seems to know what they are talking about, but this was an exception)

Anyway, they had 2 rear projection TV's side by side of about the same screen size both tuned to the same station, just regular broadcast TV. One was just a regular TV and one was digital HD. The digital HD one looked noticeable better. The scan lines were barely noticeable and the picture just looked "smoother" overall. I forget exactly what it is called, but they take the scan lines and double them and interpolate (sp?) what would be be in the extra scan lines. I'm not sure all of them can do this or not, but on this particular model, it was obvious. I don't remember for sure the brands. One of them was a Sony, one was something else, but I don't remember which one was the HDTV and which one wasn't. That has probably been at least a year ago and things have probably improved even more by now.

Keep us posted what you decide. I'm looking also at taking the plunge to HDTV but right now just in the looking stage.

my 32" Sony HiDef Wega (CRT) looks great with Time Warner/HD on the non-HD channels.

my roommate has a 32" Wega Non-HD and I can positively say my TV looks better at even non-HD sources.

maybe this is just with Sony tubes, but that's my story.

EDIT: yes, my Sony HD also has the line doubler

IMO 480i looks like, well, crap on both of my big screens, this format was never really meant to be seen on sets above 19", it was not to bad on the 25" screens but once you get much above that it really starts to show lines etc. Now that I have gotten used to watching 1080i it is very difficult for me to sit and watch NSTC broadcasts.

i agree with you guys too. it's tough to watch cable tv or Dish Network after seeing a HDTV broadcast. man, there is no comparison.. even DVD's don't look that great to me anymore.

DB, Perhaps a better way to phrase your comment would be that there's no comparison between an HD image vs. a Standard Def. image...Regarless of the source. HD wins hands down each and every time!

Interesting but the Time Warner installer commented that they have had a much sharper picture w/ the Toshiba 34HF83 than w/ the Sony KV34HS510. I couldn't make up my mind between the two but now lean toward the Toshiba specifically with Time Warner Digital/HDTV box. He said that the TW HD & Sony combo was not a good fit. I can't imagine it mattering one way or the other. digital is digital right????

Phantom, is your Sony the KV32HS510?
    Thanks
