Big bands?

I got some Duke Ellington and really like it. I wondered what else is good to check out?

Oh man - that's just the beginning! Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey are all classics. Don't neglect the new stuff though, Big Bad Vodoo Daddy & Squirrel Nut Zippers are two that come to mind that are excellent as well! Particularly partial to the first BBVD release. Excellent and you get classic big band with modern recording techniques!

What...no Harry James mentioned :) Yeah, got a ton of big band stuff and I love it. Best of all is that there are tons of cheap vinyl records in great condition for this genre.

I have over 40 of Buddy Rich's Cd's and all else in this Genre fails to compare. But I'm a drummer til my death, so pretty much a personal taste opinion I realize. Buddy's stuff just swings and jumps and then when the drum solo hits it's frightening!

Buddy Rich +1.. a little older Gene Krupa too.

I also dig Cab Calloway's early stuff was great and then evolved into more of a "Big Band"

He might have invented the music video.

If you're a drummer (I am), you'll love this: the Buddy Rich Band did a couple of "tribute" CD's in the 70's with just about every famous drummer of our generation. The music is smokin' and the production is top notch. Read my CD review here.

The Buddy Rich Big Band is the Maserati of big bands. Get "Big Swing Face" or "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy." Maynard Ferguson's Big Band was like the Cadillac of big bands. After that Basie & his orchestra, the Lionel Hampton Big Band.

I hate the "sweet" bands like Glenn Miller. Put you to sleep if you don't watch out.

And don't forget that the worlds's greatest drummer, Neil Peart, had a bit to do with producing those BR tribute sessions. He just didn't have the nerve (or the talent) to play on them. World's greatest drummer my eye. Those sessions were from the 80 and 90's I believe, as they were after he died which was 1987.

My favorite Big Band Album is Count Basie's Atomic Basie. Great dynamics and the music is a lot of fun.

Love Big Band Swing also, always have. I don't give a bleep what the rap hip hop people say, Big band will always be around, it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. So many great bands and musicians ,singers grew out of the big band era. Love some of the new stuff too, one of my favs is BSO, also check out the Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra . ;)

Stan Kenton is not to be missed.
Woody Herman from the Thundering Herd era. Especially "Blowin' Up a Storm".
Queue up Four Brothers & wait for your jaw to drop.
