Okay, here are the facts.....

Room is completely acoustically treated.
4 chairs in a row make up main seating positions.
Outside seats are one foot from side walls.
Side surrounds are wired one foot behind and two feet above listeners heads.
Rear surrounds are mounted to rear wall.
Mains are Rti A9's
Centre is Csi A4

Want to go all in wall, looks cleaner and no one walks into speakers. Here is what I need to know...

For the side surrounds can I use monopoles or are the speakers too close to the outside seating positions, therefore creating localization issues?

Can I use in ceiling speakers in the side walls instead of actual in wall speakers?

Does Polk make any "wide dispersion " in wall or in ceiling speakers that would be suited for the side surrounds?

Many thanks!

  • Hello,
The object of the left and right surround channels is to convince the listener that they are in the same environment as the movie. If the scene in the movie is taking place on the deck of an aircraft carrier, then you would hear jet engines warming and the sounds of planes being launched. Side wall mounted, diffuse non-directional type speakers work to create this enveloping environment. With your audience listening position non-directional speakers would be best. Not a super critical requirement, but somewhat important.
Usually round speakers look best in ceiling and rectangular speakers look best in walls. Also in-ceiling speakers can have a greater mounting depth than in-wall types. Other than that in-ceiling types can be placed in walls with no problems.
Any of the Polk speakers with "f/x" as a model number suffix will be non-directional types. In terms of tonal balance matching to your front stage any of the "RT" series will acoustically match.
