It appears that Emotiva is going with expandable amps like those of ATI. The gen3 xpa's will use the the topology from the xpr line, but share one chassis. They will offer 2-7 channel products with the ability to add channels to the amp as needed.
Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant

Modular amps make the most sense to me. As a installer I can say it sucks having to pull a 100 pound multi channel amp out of a rack, carry it up a flight of steps and to the van when a channel dies.
Ohhh and shipping a 100 pound amp can stink too if you dont have the box for it.

I think this is why we have moved to class D amps, 12 channel Rotel is all of about 20 pounds Vs. a custom ATI (Crestron) amp at 99 pounds.

  • I'd be surprised if this is the way they are headed.
Is there a fan in that thing?

It just makes sense to move towards class D. Most dedicated HT systems average 7.2 channels. Yes there is something to be said about the sound. IMO, the Elite SC units have BALLS for days....only 200 watt/ch+ monster amps pound better. The damn units even sounded louder overall than a comparable Onkyo unit. However, my ears slightly liked the sound of the Onkyo over the Pioneer....especially for receiver only music listening....if one has a single system and little rack space.

However, the future of great multi channel sound and efficiency seems to be with modules like the Hypex ,Ncore, etc. Would love to go the DIY route with five of their modules and two of the plate amps. Some in the 2 channel world have said some iterations have presentation, midrange, and less sterile sound that approaches a good tube amp.

The 7 ch nCore NAD M27 is one dreamy HT Beast:

Good idea for strictly HT, but not so much if you are looking for a musical 2 ch amp, that type of topology can be (and usually is) detrimental to getting the most musical sound from the amp.

Flexibility is what wins at the expense of a really refined, musical sounding amp. If that is what floats your boat and what your system build is, then it might be worth checking out for HT.
