Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - Yes still not in

Deep Purple finally made it, about time. Steve Miller and Chicago, okay. But NWA over Yes? What a frickin' joke. And don't forget, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five were admitted in the past, but not Yes. I guess Dr. Dre and his billions have a lot of sway.

I'm OK with that. I mean, I thought Yes was really cool when I was... seventeen years old.

Talented musicians (Howe, Bruford & Squire, at any rate), but, jeepers, what sophomoric lyrics. And more than a little pretentious, even by the over-the-top standards of their day.

I will admit that I do, still, occasionally spin "Starship Trooper" and "And You and I", though.

obviously, just my own opinions -- de gustibus and all that.

Sure, like NWA had good lyrics.
  • "Donald B's in the place to give me the pace
He said my man JB is on freebase
The boy JB was a friend of mine
Till I caught him in my car trying to steal my Alpine
Chased him up the street to call a truce
The silly cluck head pulled out a deuce-deuce
Little did he know I had a loaded 12 gauge
One sucker dead, LA Times first page"

I feel pretty good about this.

Somewhere along the line, say 1977, it became cool to hate
    "prog" rock.

Another Yes believer here - totally agree - though also a prog rock fan in general.

I honestly don't object to NWA though, Yes will get their due, I'm sure of it - same as Deep Purple which was long overdue IMO.

They have to have a little controversy in the announcement or it gets lost!

I did not intend to invite a comparison between Yes and NWA. Merely expressing frustration that a band that arguably invented an entire genre of music, and was certainly the vanguard of a movement in rock 'n' roll that influenced countless other bands and musicians, is once again passed over.

No, not really. I knew them all back in the day and they were world class d'bags. They were dealing drugs and used that money to set up Ruthless Records. Dre was implicated in a few drive-bys even.

    :- )

Roundabout is OK. I just got so tired of Wakeman's organ umm... abuse so fast. Fortunately, Bruford (a terrific drummer) was still with 'em.

(FWIW, of course) I like The Yes Album (with Tony Kaye) much better than Fragile. Oh, yeah, the late Chris Squire was a fine, inventive bass player. Not Entwistle... but he was operating in a very different place than the Ox.

Now, you wanna talk Yes? This is good stuff -- perhaps because they were covering Paul Simon ;-)

awful quality video; great performance (yeah, even with Wakeman...) -- can be found on the album Yesterdays.

Yes to Yes...but no Bad Company, Steppenwolf, Supertramp, and many others that are deserving as well. Deep Purple must have been blackballed for them to have gone so long without induction. Politics even in music...very sad :(

If you are referring to me, I honestly was just kidding with Mr. Hardy. I am not one to judge musical tastes (unless we're talking about Justin Beiber or something ;) ), have you heard some of the music I like? ;)

In my defense, however, I am one of a small (I assume) group that can go from the above to Johnny Cash to Rush to Phil Collins, etc.

No, not at all, just wondering why we like what we like, and that includes me, I'm incredibly eclectic and lyrics, most lyrics are not what hold my interest. Frankly, a lot bore me. Some people hear lyrics but I hear the music first, because My mind is exhausted by reality, rational thought, and incessant verbal sparring. It's nice to ARREST all that nonsense every so often. And just "listen" to some music.

Phil Collins was (presumably still is, or could be) a very fine drummer :- )

Speaking of "progressive" rock -- ahem, cough, cough... Genesis, anyone? I mean the real Genesis, before Peter Gabriel climbed up on that hill and had that weird encounter with that eagle.

There's a very good interview with Steve Miller that I read this morning where he disses the inbred and nontransparent selection process for the rock 'n' roll Hall of Fame. I give him credit for calling them out at the same time he is being inducted. I'm driving right now or I'd provide a link to the article. By the way, I did forget to mention Cheap Trick in my original post. That was an oversight, and I'm glad they made it. They were out of Rockford, and I saw them many times in small bars before they got famous. They rocked like nobody's business.

I think Bill Bruford was more of a jazz than a rock drummer. That's not a criticism, but I think that, even with Yes, he was a bit of a fish out of water.

I visited the Hall a couple years ago and it was great.

The bottom line is they can only put so many bands in per year and have to draw the line somewhere. No matter who they exclude there will always be someone who whines about it. Overall, I think they do a pretty-good job in the selection process.

If it was called "Music hall of Fame" then it would be debatable, but it's "The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame"...don't quite see NWA nor Public Enemy fitting that bill...especially over Yes

I can agree with NWA in the R&R Hall of Fame. Rock is as much an attitude as it is musical chords. And nobody has an attitude more than Niggaz Wit Attitudes. However, I agree there are plenty others in the Hall who have zero to do with R&R.

Where do you draw the line? Is Pop music Rock & Roll? Was Jimi Hendrix Rock & Roll or Blues? Should they exclude all of the Blues artists that have been inducted? Is Punk rock rock & roll? How about Prog? Disco? Rockabilly? Funk? Bubblegum? Surf? Are hip-hop and rap artists influenced by rock & roll or are they a totally unrelated genre?

IMO It's all connected in one way or another and is very difficult to draw the line. Just as I mentioned in an earlier post, no matter what they do at the Hall there will always be someone who whines about the way things are handled.
