Looking for recomendations for a Camcorder in the sub $300 range. I've looked at BestBuy a good bit online. But reviews are very mixed on everything. Need one that can take still images as well.

We have had the following one for a bit and it has served us quite well.
http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/canon-canon-vixia-hf-r600-hd-flash-memory-camcorder-bundle-0280c022/10360339.aspx
Please note that the price is in CAD and not USD. We use the internal 8gig for stills and a 64gig chip for videos.
I'm not a camera expert, this was our first camcorder and the videos look good to me as do the stills.
I don't like the software it came with so I just use windows to transfer the files over. -
Thanks! That is one of the models I was looking at. $199.99 US.--Gary--

I spent a good amount of time with camcorders. Aside from picture taking capabilities, what else are you looking for?
I used to travel internationally and ended up in taxi or public transportation. Some brands that I tried left me extremely disappointed with its anti shake/stabilization. Unless you plan on standing still, you will want a cam with good stabilization.
Deep colors, nothing I have tried beats Panasonic. The movie grain exposure, canon has you covered. Low light, truer to life colors and video stabilization, Sony got you covered.
I have many videos on YouTube (not public) that has comparison of many cams.
If I were to do it again, I would probably go Panasonic this time. If you would like to try a Sony let me know. I have the HDR-XR350. Has 160gb hard drive, wide angle 27.4 mm. Also does still images. If you would like to give this a try, pm me.
cheers,
halen
