I am with you on the upgrades part.I have been in and out of the A/V industry over the years and never had HDTV at home(even though I sold a lot of it)until I got my hands on a Sony KD-34XBR970 tube widescreen hi-def set.Which I still use in the bedroom. I only had Comcast cable internet at the time when I got it,but it was before Comcast had done all of the digital upgrades allowing them to scramble all of the channels. So I installed a three way signal splitter and sent one feed to the TV and got High defintion FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY HOUSE!
When the picture is set up properly on High defintion sets (*something that unfortunately most people have never seen*) it literally looks like you can almost reach into the screen on a live feed like a sports event and that is what I was seeing!!
I felt that damn itch again and it took me down the most expensive upgrade path that I had EVER been on!!!!
I too like you have been building my system up over the course of two decades piece by piece. This whole high definition thing just took it to the next ridiculous level.

Looks nice, Cathy! Love the Polks on stands, too. Tweeter, yeah we had one in Portland, Maine (you know, those Maine "southerners"!). I still have a few items I picked up back then.

    Enjoy!

Glad you are enjoying your new TV Cathy. I am going through the upgrades now too. First a BRP, then a 4K tv then only to realize my AVR doesn't pass 4k. No big deal right now but still.

I think your Sony XBR is just as good as a new set given the analog connections and all.
    Vinyl, the final frontier...

Avantgarde horns, 300b tubes, thats the kinda crap I want... :D

I still love this set and am going to keep it!
However the Panasonic Plasma has proven to be superior much to my surprise :o

It can play pretty much anything I throw at it video and audio-wise. Whether it be via disc or streaming. It even beats out the Sony Playstation 3 slim.Which is a streaming beast! EVERY SINGLE FORMAT that the Sony will not play, the Oppo WILL.
Oh stop it! I've been trying to convince myself that I did not need the 103....its been on the want list for awhile.

I'm really thinking about an Oppo 103 next. I'm sure I'd like the sound quality of a Marantz SACD or network player better but the Oppo's versatility is hard to ignore.

I cannot recommend these guys highly enough for upgraded versions of a LOT of stuff. They did an absolutely AMAZING job with my Onkyo PR-SC5509!!!
Customer service is to die for.

And this is with using all analog signals? I'm surprised.

  • No
    Never said that
Streaming and Blu-ray.The only analog signals are coming from the Laserdisc player, which is in the living room. Only with that does the Sony prove to be superior, mainly because of the nature of the format.Which was designed for "scanning lines" versus "displaying Pixels".
Other than that the Panasonic walks all over the Sony with better color rendition and wider color gamut. Better detail in the blacks (*I know* :# ) and a bigger picture of course.
    I'm still keeping my Sony
    Just in the bedroom

I'm better at resisting the upgrade bug than anyone else on this board!!!

Besides, before I start thinking about upgrading my system, I have to get a new 32" TV for my bedroom, as well as a backup pc. I'm thinking of going with a relatively cheap laptop. I don't really want another big box since it won't really be necessary.

I plan on using my old 19" monitor with the laptop, so it has to have a VGA input. It is just a back up so that I can continue to do what I need to do online if my main pc unexpectedly bites the dust. I don't expect to use it a lot. But I don't want to do without one.

JUST BECAUSE you're not thinking about upgrading the stereo right this moment DOES NOT mean you don't have the upgrade bug.

A little advice from someone who did it. Find yourself a nice cheap 40-50" new flatscreen and a stand or wall mount, a used oppo BluRay (maybe a bdp83) and you will never feel you wasted a single dollar or bought anything you didn't need. I did this about 10 years ago and it was money well spent then, downright cheap now. Come on, proceed into the 1990s!

I'm sure it does and I'll have to take your word for it. Right now I'm listening to the latest India.Aria & Joe Sample "Christmas With Friends" album 44.1kHz/24bit FLAC download. Not DSD but sounding good and in the Spirit of the Season nonetheless. Comparing the LSiM703's to the A3rx-c's. These Polks are sounding really nice but Damn do the Chane's hold their own!

  • I already had the Crpenters Greatest hits 24/96 FLAC file, but when superhirez.com made it available in DSD I donwloaded it SO fast!!
I COULD NOT BELIEVE THE DIFFERENCE!!
    Same goes for Santana Abraxas
    Michael Jackson Thriller...........

The Carpenters were amazing___ musicians and Karen had one of the most beautiful, unique, voices ever recorded. I was a fan of them back in the 70's , but a bigger fan now .
  • Well if you have anything that will play DSD I CANNOT recommend highly enough you go to superhirez.com and download it. It's STILL on the main page in the list of top downloads!

Bezels on new tvs are quite small. On my new 4k samsung they are at an inch. You will need to be sure your tv can output 5.1 some only do 2ch. Then run optical out from tv to receiver, sit back and enjoy.

This is important. Im a Samsung dealer and I can tell you that the optical out is not full blown Dolby Digital, it gets down mixed to PLII or PCM. There is a licensing thing with dolby and samsung. However the Smarthub version of Netflix will pass DolbyDigtal 5.1...

Hope this is helpful and still current.
