Bipoles/dipoles on back wall
I'm considering acquiring a pair of Fxi30's for the rear surrounds (6th channel). However, because of my room layout, the sitting position is a couch that's on the wall. So since I don't have any room behind me, the rear surrounds would actually be hanging at ear level on the back wall.
Does anyone have a similar setup? Although not optimal, will it provide a decent diffusion of sound in bipolar mode? Would it be superior to the RTi28s?

I don't think I'd put them at ear level ...
Try them 2-3 feet up on the wall ... Try them on the ceiling pointing down ... Move the couch forward a little and try them on the floor or small stands pointing up. -

Ear level in a seated position would be about 3 feet up on the wall...HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

He means 2-3 feet up from ear level.

You mean six to seven feet high? Yeah, it would be nice to do that, but it would look awful in my room.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

LOL ... Where do you have the side surrounds now ?!

Ear level, no go, as aforementioned.
If you are going 6.1, that's a single channel....not a pair, like in 7.1. You can certainly wire them appropriately as a pair for 6.1, and work fine, it's just not "standard".
Is there a need for a pair? No. Pick a small center to fill the void, and bump it up as much as possible would be a suggestion.
I think that a single center channel, TBD mounted, downfiring would work good, only if your structure permits. If you are constrained, as most of us are, you may have to be creative.
Perhaps a pic of your room would help? Or the location area?CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
The reason I'm interested in using a pair of speakers for the 6th channel is because Denon recommends it. According to my receiver's manual, "Though the surround back channel only consists of 1 channel of playback signals for 6.1 channel sources, we recommend using two speakers....Using two speakers results in a smoother blend with the sound of the surround channels and better sound positioning of the surround back channel when listening from a position other than the center."
The side surrounds are currently Rti28's on speaker stands on each side of the couch. I know that's not optimal by any means, but it still sounds better than 5.1.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

I know what Denon recommends, it was just a suggestion. Follow what method you feel is appropriate. I choose Dolby.
I don't think the use of direct radiating speakers are bad in any way, and don't even recall that being an issue.
