Hello. I am trying to get together a home theater system to watch movies and play games. The room i want to set it up in will be 10'width x 12'length x 10'height . I have a Onkyo TX-NR727 receiver and i really like what people have said about the Polk RTi series. Theres a really good price on them right now. ($119ea RTi8) and ($249ea RTi12). Heres my question. Will my receiver be powerful enough for the 12RTi? If not. Then what about the RTi8?

Comments

  • If someone could please reply by tonight that would be awesome. The price of the Rti's will go back up in price tomorrow. Trying to get these today for Cyber Monday. Thanks!

Big question, are you using a subwoofer?
  • Love your avatar. I was planning on getting one but if i go with the RTi12's i read they offer enough bass. And as for the Rti8, i should get a subwoofer.

For movies and gaming, either would need a sub IMO...

Welcome to Club Polk djphase. With your existing receiver, I would suggest the RTi8 speakers and use the difference to get a good subwoofer. If you had an 800 or higher series Onkyo AVR, then I would suggest the RTi12's which benefit from an external amplifier and you would need an AVR with preamp outputs for that.

Thanks for the welcome. Awww i was hoping the Rti12's would work. I really love the look on it better than the RTi8. Ok well yes i will be getting a subwoofer. I was thinking of the Polk Audio PSW10

The 12's you are considering dig deeper than a PSW10. Waste of $$ IMO...
  • Well thats why im here. To get advice from the pros. I really appreciate the quick replies. Well i dont think im going with the RTi12's anymore because of my lacking power in my receiver. So i guess the Rti8's will do with the PSW505
  • With this receiver i have could i add a center speaker and some rear ones as well?

Get the PSW505 on sale instead of the PSW10. The PSW10 is ok for an apartment, but it is an underwhelming sub. I used a pair with my old Monitor system and gave a pair away to a friend in an apartment.
If you get the RTi12's, they will work ok, but not close to optimum. You may be disappointed with them using the TX-NR727. It is your choice.

Cant i buy an amp to make the RTi12's work close to optimum with my receiver?
  • xcapri79 wrote: »
By the way out of interest, what color are you choosing?
Do you want a center and surrounds as well?

Im going with black. Yes center and surround rear speakers if it will work.
  • xcapri79 wrote: »
Unfortunately, your receiver doesn't have preamp outputs for your front speakers.

What does that mean? Are you talking about adding an amp to make the RTi12's work?

That receiver doesn't have pre-outs for an amp.
Look man if your heart is set on the 12's then get them and build around them. just don't try to blow it out with that receiver
That receiver will play the 12's in 2-channel, later get a receiver with preouts, then try to pick up an amp

just take your time and get what you want
    2-channel: Modwright KWI-200 Integrated, Dynaudio C1-II Signatures
Desktop rig: LSi7, Polk 110sub, Dayens Ampino amp, W4S DAC/pre, Sonos, JRiver
Gear on standby: Melody 101 tube pre, Unison Research Simply Italy Integrated
Gone to new homes: (Matt Polk's)Threshold Stasis SA12e monoblocks, Pass XA30.5 amp, Usher MD2 speakers, Dynaudio C4 platinum speakers, Modwright LS100 (voltz), Simaudio 780D DAC

Thanks for your info. Ok so no amp and no RT12's. I'll stick with the 8's. So can I add center and rear speakers as well with my receiver?

Yes you can. Add a capable sub, run as small for HT and you'll be golden. Just keep an eye on the volume knob...

I'll most likely go with the PSW505 subwoofer. What did you mean when u said "run as small for HT"?

Get the DSW Pro 660wi. Way better sub than the PSW505.

By small, he means set your speakers to small in the set up menu.

Get yourself a pair of RTi4's for your surrounds and a CSi5 center speaker.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polk-Audio-CSi5-BLACK-RTi-Center-Channel-Speaker-NEW-/361409260006

Black RTi4's may be harder to find new at a good price. There is still sales on for Polk T15's for $50 a pair that would work for surround speakers.

That center speaker is expensive. Is there anything a little cheaper for polk that will work?

We realize that you are on a budget and the PSW505 is going for $170 at Newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882290130
That is a good deal. Consider getting two. You can run two subs off your receiver.

When setting your speakers, the AVR setting is "small" and you set your crossover for 80Hz, but those are details after you get your equipment set up and connected.

    Got it thanks.

Ok I guess I'll figure that out when I get it all together.

    So far...
    2 x RTi8
    PSW 505
I'm browsing right now for the center and rear surround speakers. The T15's are interesting

  • xcapri79 wrote: »
The CSi5 from Polk Audio on ebay has an extra 20% off that will run out soon.

Another option for low cost, but decent surrounds would be a pair of OWM3's. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polk-Audio-OWM3-BLACK-2-Way-Multi-Application-Speakers-PAIR-/231490400078

Black RTi4's which are a bit on the expensive side.
    http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-Performance-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B0000E2XEB/

A higher cost option would be a pair of FXiA4's.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polk-Audio-FXiA4-BLACK-RTiA-Di-BiPole-Surround-Speakers-PAIR-/391293057174

Thank you for the suggestions. Since the sales are good right now i think i should at least want to get some speakers even if i cant get them all today. Which speakers do you think are a must to get tonight for the sales?
  • xcapri79 wrote: »
Probably the CSi5 with the extra 20% off.

Ok I'll get that. Now I can either get the PSW 505 subwoofer or a pair of the RTi8's. Both of these are on newegg.

I thought you already purchased the RTi8's and PSW505's. At the minimum get the pair of RTi8's. I thought that was a done deal. Because they are going for such a good price, you could consider a pair for surrounds as well.

No. Sorry if I confused you. Only thing I have is the Onkyo 727 receiver. So far I'm getting a pair of RTi8. Just trying to figure if I should get the subwoofer or the center speaker now.

Get the fronts and center now as it's important that the front stage is timbre matched. Get a better sub than the PSW505 later when you have a bit more to spend.

Good plan. I should have also mentioned that the rears/surrounds don't matter anywhere near as much as the rest as it's basically ambient sound.

Thats good to know! I'll concentrate on the front for now.
