Anyone running front effect speakers with a Yamaha rxv1400?

Worth the extra money for some more speakers?

I wouldn't buy until I knew how much I would use them. Borrow a pair from a friend, they don't have to be topshelf speaks to see if you like the effect. Yamaha uses the effects on their own dsp soundfields. I think the front effects are used up in the front corners of your room to widen the soundstage.

Those speakers aren't used for Dolby Digital, or DTS decoded tracks since those tracks were never recorded into the original material. I may speak out of turn, since I don't own Yamaha, but many say that the effects are cool when you first get them for listening to music, but the novelty wears off and you find that the normal speaker placements with the decodings intended for movies are the best overall settings. That feeling is not exclusive to Yamaha, most people just don't use the receivers to produce sounds (dsp fields) from there receivers that weren't part of the original recordings.

Try it out and let us know how you like it,

Thanks for the info. I'm still waiting on the rxv1400 receiver till Wed. or Thurs. Might hook up my little jvc satellites left over from my other setup to check the effect out. Around here they are still selling the Polk R15's for $38 each. I could save $80 by not buying these.

Front Effects, depending on what they are used for.

Yamaha's older units just used the front effects for phantom modes (opera house, stadium, etc etc) - they are NOT used for movies.

Again, depending on how this design puts them to use, the older DSP models used them like I said above.

i have the rxv-1400 and unless you are going to have 9 speakers plugged in then i wouldn't use the effects speakers.

they are only used in yamaha's dsp fields which so far i haven't liked. If you want dolby ex and thx ex which is awesome you need the back surrounds. the reason i don't like the dsp is the music was processed and effects put on in the studio, so the dsp is overkill. For instance, i love acappella music, but these guys usually record IN the hall so if you listen in hall mode it's just to much echo. If they recorded dry, then the effects would sound much more lifelike.

I don't think the Yamaha 1400 or 2400 will let you do surround backs and front effects at the same time anyway.
