The Atmos/DTSX itch
I have been a proud owner of of my Polk speakers for over five years no. But I am getting that itch to upgrade my 5.1 setup to 5.1.2 since Dolby and DTS started releasing their new sound formats.
My current setup is pretty basic
AVR - Pioneer Vsx-819h-k
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Home/AV-Receivers/Pioneer+Receivers/VSX-819H-K
Fronts - TSI 200's
Center - CS10
Surrounds - OWM3's
Sub - PSW10
The AVR's I have been considering are a Pioneer Elite SC-91 or a Yamaha Aventage RX-A1050. I've always wanted an Elite with a D3 amp but I am open to suggestions.
I would also like some suggestions on speakers for the front height channels. Preferably upward firing speakers since I cannot do inwall or ceiling mounted speakers.
I also want to get a new sub as well without breaking the bank. I'd prefer to keep everything else since I have been happy with my current setup. My only issue is that everything sounds a little bright at high volumes. Especially when listening to music but I use them primarily for movies and its not as much of an issue there. I would like to spend under 2k.

You're running your AVR into clipping, most likely. When it starts sounding shrill, bright, and the soundstage collapses, you've gone too far. You were going too far before it started sounding like that.
I'd upgrade your sub if you're doing mostly movies.
1) You can crossover your speakers, if they aren't already, so they aren't attempting to play the deep bass. This will free up a lot of power from your AVR which will give you better high volume dynamics and you'll run less of a risk of killing one of your drivers with a clipped signal.
2) Incredible knock the pictures off the wall bass.
Check out SVS or HSU. You'll be happy to give your PSW10 to a friend for free after hearing either.

In my opinion, Atmos will not really take off. The reflecting speakers are too room dependant and most people aren't going to put speakers in their ceiling. It will probably stay niche. Only time will tell I suppose.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

I agree, I think atmost will be doa as far as HT is concerned cept for a nietzschean market. But I am totally biased. I don't much like any newer films.

Sorry I am a complete novice(dumb) but what is this crossover you speak of?

He just means the frequency you cut off your speakers on your AVR and send the low bass to your sub. Usually around 80 Hz.Currently orbiting Bowie's Blackstar.!
Polk Lsi-7s, Def Tech 8" sub, HK 3490, HK HD 990 (CDP/DAC), AKG Q701s

Found it, crossover was set way too high. I set it at 80hz and there is a noticeable difference now.
