Hi ,
I am the proud owner of a pair of the above with vr3 upgrades (Thx Trey) and new tweeters.
They have performed well until now with no noticeable problems but over the weekend listening to 2 albums back to back there was a noticeable scratchy vibrating distortion on a few tracks , mainly at the chorus. This was heard through both speakers. The albums feature the same producer Joe Henry. Replaying the offending tracks over again a few times made me think the problem was more at mid level than bass or treble but I could not identify which driver/s it was coming from. I played several other albums but could not replicate the problem. The one unusual thing in common I could identify was that both albums feature the use of an instrument called a "pump organ" and I wonder if it could be the response to that instrument which is the problem.
Could somebody more knowledgeable than me please advise if I actually do have a problem that needs to be resolved or I accept the fact that the speakers can't handle certain "exotic" instruments.
If I do have a problem what can I do to resolve it ?
Many Thanks

Before you really start to worry or take any action regarding the speakers.
Take them out of your system and put ANY known good speakers into place.
Does the problem follow the speakers? Or did the distortion still appear with the different speakers?
It would be very unusual for both speakers to develop the same audible fault at the same time. Check all the electronics and source before spending a penny on any work on the speakers. And it goes without saying (but I will anyway) that the test is to be performed with the offending album(s).

First Guess: The distortion is recorded into the album, not a problem with the speakers. If you still hear the distortion with other speakers--and they're revealing enough to be a fair comparison--it's probably "on the record".

Thanks , I've got a pair of Harbeth stashed away. I'll try tonight when I get home from work

With 2nd set of speakers there is a slight distortion, Nowhere near as discordant or prominent as the Polks but definitely there especially when you turn it up a bit. Thinking perhaps this could be to do with the frequency response difference between a set of 46hz monitors and the Polks. Just for reference the track I have been playing just now to test is from Rodney Crowell's Sex and Gasoline "I've done everything I can". Not a particularly heavy track at all.

I had a problem recently with my system. I thought it was the amp. It ended up being the cables on my TT.HT/2Channel: Emotiva MMC-1, Adcom GFA-555II, Polk SDA 3.1's, Teac TN-300 TT, Polk Center and Sub.
Bedroom system: Carver CT-24, Parasound HCA-800II, Monitor 10's
Additional projects: RTA 12c's -
Yeah, I have to amend my previous post. If you're hearing the distortion on other speakers, that distortion is farther up the chain, in the amp, preamp, source, interconnects...or recorded onto the album.

Thanks I'll give it a try over the weekend

It could be the record, the stylus, cable, phono preamp. The polks may be more sensitive and defined letting you know you have a problem.POLK SDA 2.3 TLS BOUGHT NEW IN 1990, Gimpod/Sonic Caps/Mills RDO-198

Tried it with a small 20w bantam gold amp I have and problem was not there so I think it must be my old and trusty (???) Marantz PM90SE needs a service if I can find anybody to do it. I notice there is an electronic rustle every time I move the volume control now which I don't recall being there before. Thanks for all your help.
