I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers.... I think ALL artist should get the exposure they deserve that's all. I'm all about any artist making good music breaking into the adult contemporary, dance, pop, rock, R&B, Latin, etc charts all at the same time such as what Adele has done with her past and present projects.

I'm not an artist that has a record out but the question was asked by one who does, Tyrese questioned why his R&B songs are not getting Pop spins? He's a mainstream figure in movies...so I'm sure he's wondering what's stopping his music? His is just one case.

If there are markets such as where you are that are playing everything on Pop radio, I'm all for it, that's Awesome and that's how it should be.

    Good music is good music!
Don't know much about Tyrese, but so much of today's R&B has to be edited for content to play on the airwaves that sometimes there are no lyrics left. Gone are the days of The Ohio Players, and The Commodores, when they painted an image with words . You knew what they were singing about without them having to actually say it.

Today's generation are just lazy when it comes to just about everything. They can't play instruments, so they steal melodies from somebody else and combine that with lyrics that leave nothing to the imagination because they lack one for themselves.

I know I am making some sweeping generalizations here, but that's just how I feel about most of today's music.

I think that music is literally devine. It is about the only thing that separates us from the beast so I listen to everything except for Springstein. He sucks ****.

R&B is also not a very POPular genre of music. I think I've had one person visit my room over 4 years at RMAF and throw on some R&B/Soul. That in itself should be telling.
Well, we know nothing has yet to outsell the whole rock genre....

Still, there has been some very popular R&B artist over the years. Yes, there has been some changes in music, the industry, etc, etc. However, what's the answer to Tyrese's question when some of the top selling/charting R&B/Soul/Hip-Hop artist of the last several years are: Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke, Sam Smith(Only artist to sell 1 Million albums in the US and the UK in 2014!), Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, etc. All of these artist, including Adele have listed many R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop, etc. artist as influences to their music.

The interesting thing is...many talk of how soulful Adele's sound is. While she is talented...her sound/style/voice is nothing like that of several soul/R&B singers that the masses know nothing about.. artist like Jill Scott, India Arie, Chrisette Michele, Ledisi , Jazmine Sullivan, K. Michelle, Marsha Ambrosius. Anyone of them could cover "Hello" and hae great music that will knock your socks off!

So, even though R&B is not the top selling genre it is one of the leading streaming genres http://www.musicbusinessworldwide.com/rock-music-twice-popular-pop-america-rb-rules-streaming/. An artist like Tyrese is very well entitled to ask the question about why his single "Shame" that topped the R&B charts is not hitting mainstream. Look and listen to the songs of Sam Smith and Tyrese and look at the charts. You can't blame him for wanting to get his music out there.

Sam Smith - "Lay Me Down"
    Charts
    US Billboard Hot 100 - 8
    US Adult Contemporary (Billboard) -11
US Adult Top 40 (Billboard) -12

    US R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay (Billboard) - 41
    US Rhythmic (Billboard) - 40

    Tyrese Gibson - "Shame"

    US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (Billboard) - 32

Heck man...its all good music to me. I have at least an album or song that I like from every artist I listed. Adele's "Someone Like You" is one of my favorites from her.

I think we all know the answer, it about greed and money!

There ya go.....you answered your own questions.

To me though, maybe we are asking the wrong questions. Maybe we should start with the definition of an "artist". Too many imho like to refer to themselves as such but have no reason to.

Lets take a Painter as an artist. He paints a picture using his creativity, talent, not concerned about if or what it will be worth the day after he paints it,

How about a Sculpture, they create images in the same way using their creativity and talents to convey something not contemplating the value of that work before hand.

Musical artists, in my mind, should do the same. Create music using their god given talents to the best of their abilities and convey that to the general public in the best sound/recording they can.

A true artist wants to convey a message within their scope of work. They want to move you emotionally or visually. Create something that previously didn't exist. Don't know if I can say the same for a lot of todays self proclaimed "artist".

To me anyway, if a musical artist has to resort to controversy, public behavior, or is more worried about the show than the music to sell records, then they lost their edge as a true artist.

The flip side of course is the injection of money and greed into the process by recording companies/distributors and even the artists themselves. Some artists are forced to sign contracts that leave a lot of the quality aspect up to the corporations. They have to give up x amount of control for a set amount of money guaranteed. Some artists have high demands an exclude themselves from the big money supporting distribution machines.

Such is life, like a box....there is a top and a bottom to everything. They say the cream always rises to the top, but I say "a t u r d floats too."
