Issues With My Pro-Ject TT

I have a Pro-Ject 2.9 Wood.

About a week ago it started making weird noises (intermittent whirring/buzzing)

I dropped a few drops of lube in there and seemed to help.

This morning it wouldn't work. Flipped the switch and nothing. After flipping the switch a bunch of times and giving the platter a gentle help...it started up. I then shut it off and left for work.

Just got back from work and flip the switch and blew my mind....THE PLATTER STARTED SPINNING THE WRONG WAY!?!?!

Can anyone help? Do I need a new motor? Why would it spin the wrong way?

Thanks for any advice as I am dumbfounded!

Paul

There is probably a motor start capacitor that should be checked. That would account for the buzzing sound and the wrong direction problem. There used to be a turntable (I can't remember which one) that had a mechanical linkage connected to the "on" selector which gave the platter a shove in the right direction when you switched it on. The motor didn't have enough torque to start the platter moving by itself.

You bought the wrong oil, you bought reverse oil..
Stand on the other side of the platter and put a drop or two of the reverse oil that will fool the platter and it will start going the right way...lol
Sorry just trying to be funny..lol

Have you contacted Pro-Ject about the issue?
Probably needs a new motor, that's my guess.

I had the same issue with my Pro-ject RM5. When the motor goes it spins backwards. You would of thought it would of taken less than three tries at dropping the needle on an album for me to figure that out! Get the bottom off so you can see the number on the motor, give Needle Doctor a call, and about $40 and 3 days later the answer will arrive. A quick couple of minutes with the soldering gun and all will be well. While you are in there you might take a look at the funky Pro-ject motor mounting, and if you are using the speed controller, you are going to want to shore up the mounting so the motor doesn't cant when the belt is on the 45 rpm spindle. Good luck!

Synchronous motors that run off the mains have two windings. One is connected to the mains, the second uses a capacitor to shift the phase by 90 degrees, like Ken mentioned. The phase shift creates a rotating magnetic field the armature chases. The cap can go bad, loose connections, or its a winding issue.

Loose/out of position magnet on the armature can cause the problem too. I read about one fellow that disassembled and re-glued the magnet but it still turned in the wrong direction. He disassembled and shifted it slightly and it worked properly. That table has seen some use, the motor could just be tired...lol.

I’m around if you need assistance. ;)

I agree. Knowing Rob and myself, it is probably one of the best cared for, but most used TT's out there. :)

I found a pretty good looking turntable repair facility about an hour from me, but I am considering opening her up myself. If it seems fairly basic, maybe I'll just order the parts myself and make a trip to your castle for a little assistance :)

Ended up taking it to a repair shop. They replaced the motor and said it works fine now. Only problem is they bent the stylus. However, to their credit, they are replacing it no questions asked.

But now I wait again. Just over two months :(
