Dynaco Pas-4 phono section sucks

I will begin that Dave and a few others did warned me that the phono section of the Dynaco kinda sucks. Well for $40 and the Sony processor that Bill gave me you needed a masters degree in parametric eq. slope and all kinds of other features for surround that I did not need, and still no individual tone controls. After being spoiled w/ the NAD 1020a I needed a real pre/amp. I already asked ages ago and was told that tt needs more gain and that's natural but for me to get any volume that I prefer I have to dial this thing to about 5:00 . At that volume just about every speaker in my house would be blown because I really can't push the volume for everything else past 9:00. LPs for me are my 3rd choice for listening but still I need something else. Again maybe another NAD, Adcom, or that Parasound PL something that had everything going for including a remote, which by this time is not a deal breaker.

  • What I need is an all encompassing pre/amp. I just checked on the Z and it's a phono pre only and not for me. Even at that price I have way to many sources and not enough room to start to have specialized gear. I found this Parasound PLD/something a month or so ago and also found a head to head competitive review w/ a tubed pre and for coin the Parasound won hands down and even had a remote. I tried to retrieve it but had no luck. If anyone can find that review it might surprise you. That to would be out of my price range even though it is already an older unit.
Thanks for the offer guys, I think it's Nad, Adcom, or dare I say a better Yamaha one of these days.
If anyone finds that shoot out let me know I posted the review..

  • Guys, I found that shoot out of a Parasound P/LD-1100 vs. a Wright WLA-12a tube pre/amp and it looks like the Parasound won hands down here. This would be the one for me. The review is 10 years old and back then it was going for $850 brand new. This has every function and input w/ a remote. Read the shoot out and see .

  • It's a discontinued model and I have not seen a single one for sale anywhere. Oh well at least I found the thing and the article while long might interest you tubers vs. solid staters.

Look for some older processors too, more than enough hook ups, sound great, and for about 300 bucks on the used markets about the best sounding pre's your going to find for the coin. Plus most have some darn fine dacs in them.

Example would be a B&K ref. 30 or 50, Anthem AVM 20 or 30. Any of Classe SSP's

Just wanted to clarify one thing - Are you talking about PAT 4 or PAS 4? There aren't many PAS 4 (tube) around and I have PAS3MKII and PAS 3X which both has phono stage that does not suck!
Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin:
  • Megastat, No it's the solid state Pat-4. The NAD 1020a I had just put that phono section to shame. Yes I get the tube Dynacos were better and the guy I bought my pre off of was using as his main amp a Dynaco ST-70 w/o the cage and all shined up and sounded great. I think P-Man has something in mind for me again....

Are you interested in the Parasound zphono? I traded for Todd's and now I'm not so sure I have a legitimate use for it. I'd let you have it for $50 plus shipping.

I agree. This is a great phono pre. It opened my eyes to how much of a change can be made with the preamp. Offers great value and is small enough to hide almost anywhere.

Skip - Im not sure why you aren't going to use it when the analogue bug bits.
