My PolkAudio Floor Standing Speakers Have Cracking Sounds

Hi,
I bought a pair of PolkAudio Floor Standing speakers to be used as front L/R. I also have a sub woofer connected to a Sony Receiver STR DE885 and the Karaoke amp/mixer. I play a music on DVD and the stereo system sounds good until about 30 mins and then there is cracking sound come from the speakers. Also when we play karaoke and turn the volume up then there are cracking sounds come from the speakers. Any help would be appreciated.

So no cracking/popping for the first 30 minutes? Let me clarify - you aren't touching any controls on the receiver (volume, tone, etc.) during this 30 minute period and they just start making cracking/popping noises on their own?

    Still under warranty?
  • I turned up the volume a little bit
  • No more warranty. If I know which equipment is bad then I buy a new replacement but for now I don't know which caused it. I am suspecting the speaker, but why it has good sound for the first 1 hr or so then start having the problem. I am not sure if the karaoke mixer or the receiver could be the source of the problem too. I resettled the Sony 7.1 channel receiver to the factory setting but it didn't seem to help.

I leaning toward the speaker problem for now. Do you have any suggestion for buying karaoke speakers? I am planning to spend about 1000 dollars or less only
I read some blogs and forums and they recommend to buy PA type of speakers for karaoke. Any suggestion is appreciated
    Thanks

Yes....PA type speakers is best for Karaoke. Home speakers are simply not designed for it.

As for the crackling noise, I think the offending piece is the Karaoke processor....and you. Turning up the volume with a distorted signal and you probably fried something in the crossover/tweeters. The volume is your enemy, not necessarily a piece of gear malfunctioning.

I'm not a PA speaker guy, so maybe some other DJ types can chime in for some suggestions for you.

The drivers can only move so far in each direction. Turn the bass down and take it easy on the volume.

At normal listening volume I had this problem in one channel it was the receiver. After it warmed up about 30 minutes and it fried my tweeter

I second, third, fourth the fact those speakers are NOT meant to be used at crazy loud levels. I'd also go with PA speakers as suggested for your karoke stuff.....

    @erniejade

What PA speakers would you suggest?

Culprit? Not enough pure power. Too much volume. Blown something. Diagnose.

We are at that stage. Place your ear up to each tweeter, mid and woofer to find out exactly where the issue is coming from. Then let us know.

For home and inexpensive, just find a used set of jbl powered eon or a yamaha stage pass 300 pr 600. They have built in mixers and dont take up a lot of room.

The noise could be the mic input being too hot or the mic itself shooting distortion. Does it happen as you sing louder or too close to the mic?

What kind of mixer are you using? Vocopro? Its not a powered mixer right?
