Would This Be a Good Idea?

Not a bad idea except you'd want each piece in a box, then vacuum seal the box.
    Political Correctness'.........defined

I wonder if polyurethane foam surrounds would be happier or less happy in vacuo than exposed to the ravages of 21st Century air?

    Probably happier.

High vacuum storage conditions would probably cause all kinds of problems with outgassing -- but the 'seal-a-meal' vacuum is pretty nominal. We're not talking mass spectrometer-grade vacuum (diffusion pumps)!
