Speakers for Fisher Tube Amp 25wpc

I am looking for vintage Polk floor speakers that will work well with a low power 25 wpc tube amp.

Speakers must be no taller than 25" or wider than 20" as they are going into an old console unit.

Currently on craigslist are Polk monitor 7 series 2 with SL2500 tweeter for $40.00 I am definitely on a budget (used, less than $250) and looking for a deal.

Would these m7 work for me? What other models would be ideal on a budget?

First off... 25 watts per channel isn't my idea of low-powered, FWIW -- speaking as a guy whose 'real' hifi has about 3.5 watts per channel (downhill, with a tail wind) -- single-ended 2A3 :- )

An earlier Monitor Series Model 7 (7, 7A, or 7B) would certainly be well worth a try with a Fisher vacuum tube amplifier or receiver (which model do you have). I don't really know anything about the "Series 2" but I'd expect it to be, as well.

... the price for the Polks you mention is certainly right (although, that said, the vacuum tube Fisher stuff is quite good, and deserves very good high-sensitivity loudspeakers... when the opportunity presents itself).

    It is a Fisher 400.

Would you be able to recommend some high-sensitivity loudspeakers that I could find used for under $250? They will be used in a large loft (18ft ceiling) for rock, jazz, and 2 channel movies. thanks!

Stuffing a box speaker inside a cavity originally designed for different drivers is an acoustic disaster in the making.

No, unless you got very lucky. Is DIY a possibility? There are some nice high-sensitivity, extended range drivers available. See, e.g., www.madisound.com (Fostex drivers).

I got the impression from the OP that the old console is going to be used more or less as an equipment stand; the loudspeakers probably will be a little closer together than optimal, but it doesn't have to be an a priori disaster, I'd opine.

Not really all that different than stuffing a pair of loudspeakers on a bookshelf, and -- hard to believe as it might be today -- in the parlance of the 1970s, the Monitor 7, like Villchur's epochal Acoustic Research loudspeakers, was considered a 'bookshelf speaker', and many of them were so installed in college dorms of the mid/late 1970s. Optimal? No. But not disastrous (especially compared to the other inexpensive loudspeakers of the time).

EDIT: if the 400's stuffed into a console, be sure it has room to breathe. As I'm sure the OP knows, the output section produces prodigious heat.

A Fisher 400 in good working order is a fine sounding piece of hardware (pp 7868 outputs); most of the 'best' loudspeakers for it, unfortunately, are way too large and way too expensive for the constraints of this thread. I am on the cusp of recommending a pair of Klipsch Heresys... but I do have a very hard time recommending Heresys to anyone :-P That said, they'll be lively and dynamic with a 400; tons of fun -- and they'll sound about as good as they're going to being powered by a 400! :- ) I know that my erstwhile Klipsch Cornwalls sounded good (it's all relative!) with my Fisher 500C.

Even worse than a speaker on a bookshelf as the purposed would have two baffles to deal with instead of one.

  • I have two current Craigslist options, but please any other recommendations are still needed!

    $40 - Polk Monitor 7 Series 2, sl2500 tweeters (from 1990) B+ condition
    $280 - Klipsch KG4

The KG4 has a large woofer in the back of the speaker... would having a 4-way like this need more power than my amp can deliver?

The "woofer" on the rear of the KG4 is a passive radiator, it is not powered. The KG4 has a higher efficiency rating than the Polk, so it would take less power to obtain the same SPL. That said, you absolutely cannot stuff the KG4 inside of a console due to the rear firing PR. Furthermore, as I previously stated stuffing any speaker inside a console is a really bad idea.

BTW, the "woofer" on the front of the Polk Monitor 7 is also a passive radiator.
