Klipsch Heresy 2

There was a pair of these in in a light wood great condition at an old dead guys estate sale for $220. I was a little creeped out by it and just went to keep my mom company. Question is, did I pass up on a great set of speakers?

While not my favorite Klipsch, $220 was a good price if in good working & cosmetic condition - you could have made your $$ back and then some if you didn't dig them.

The is a good price but I wasn't that impressed when I owned a set that I purchased new. After a while, the horn drivers were too ear piercing. Probably should have mated it with a tube amp and not a solid state amp that I used at the time.

I would have used my tube setup on them as I had a pair of horns on a solid state rig and the pieces had bad synergy. I kinda wish I would have bought them just to try. I saw a listing and according to one seller they were $2000 new?

Nah - $2K that's a total rip. But you see them from time to time actually selling on the used market (not listed but sold) in the $400-$500 range - probably would have been nice to hear on your tubes I agree. But I also agree - the Klipsch sound is a bit strident for my ears. IMO They lack warmth, which tubes might have added.

They're very polarizing loudspeakers -- they're a great gateway drug for low power/fleapower amplification (e.g., single-ended, direct heated triode vacuum tube amplifiers) and high-sensitivity loudspeakers, but they're lacking in bass (small, sealed box) and aggressive in the MR and treble (and also not too extended in terms of HF). That said, they're a lot of fun, and might whet one's appetite for better quality high-sensitivity loudspeakers.

There's a cottage industry of small companies that sell a modification or upgrade for pretty much every component of the "heritage" Klipsch loudspeakers. Many folks seem to enthusiastically support the sound of these speakers once pretty much everything about them except the screws and the grille cloth has been replaced ;-)
The price quoted in the OP is quite good, though.

In the interest of disclosure - I owned and lived with a pair of their bigger siblings (Klipsch Cornwalls) for about 10 years before moving on to the world of vintage Altecs. I much prefer the Altec sound to the Klipsch sound (FWIW).

I routinely see them sell for $400+. Mint goes up to $700. Although you're into Forte and Chorus territory for that money. I don't know why anyone would pick a Heresy over the others if price was the same.
