DVD-Audio hookup

Please excuse the naiveness inherent in my question, but how do you hook up a DVD-Audio player to a receiver to play on the 6th and 7th channels if the RCA connects are limited to a 5.1 setup?

Basically, you can't. DVD-A and SACD ar both limited to 5.1 channel. Depending on your equipment, you might be able to apply a DSP mode but I highly doubt it. Most of the preamps/receivers that I've seen only allow for direct playback of the analog multichannel input.

    Well, that sucks.

Is this true as well if you just use the DVD player exclusively for DVD-video playback?

My DVD-Audio player has a coaxial digital output, but I can't seem to get it work. I'm using the same settings on my receiver as my last DVD player and it was hooked up via digital coax. I'm using a Denon 1803 receiver.

If you use a Digital Coax/toslink you will not hear the Hi-Rez audio track. What you will get is DD5.1 which can be routed to your rear speaker(s) if your receiver is equiped with the necessary DSP/DPL modes.

Double check the OSD for your receiver and make sure you have the proper input selected/turned on, and see if your player has an option to enable the digital coax output. You might also want to make sure that you changed back to your normal settings on the receiver after listening to DVD-A/SACD discs.

I'll double check my preamp and see if I can apply a DSP/DPL mode to Hi-rez discs and let you know.

As I suspected, my preamp does not allow for the application of any DSP/DPL modes to the analog inputs (SACD/DVD-A). I can however apply or defeat THX re-eq for DVD-A/SACD. I'm also able to use either the side OR rear speakers for multi-channel music. Does your 1803 allow the same option?

I unplugged the 3 RCA cables for now. I was getting great audio when these cables were hooked and the receiver was adjusted accordingly, but of course it was only in 5.1.

Right now I'm just trying to get the digital coax to work properly. Haven't figure out why I'm not getting audio from a regular CD or DVD disc. I've checked the settings on my receiver and on the DVD player several times. One other possibility is a bad coax cable, but that's a long shot.

Got it hooked up properly. Damn humans -- they make too many errors.

Thanks, Frank Z, for your assistance.

for me to listen to a DVD-a disc.. i have to go into the DVD-a players menu and switch it from PCM for watching a movie to 6ch analog output every time i want to listen to DVD-a. either that or buy a seperate DVD player.. which i'm actually thinking of doing.. wow. that would give me three DVD players in my HT system

or else sell them all and just get one universal player. but i can't seem to find one that has everything i want. namely a DVI output that plays DVD-a, and SACD.

correct me if I am wrong but you originally asked about playing through seven speakers? You could split the signal from your player's 5.1 surround output and then feed this signal to your receiver's muti-channel input jacks if it has a set for the back surrounds.

You would end up with the same signal for the respective right or left surround and right or left back surround.

You would have to judge as to whether you liked the way this sounds. I read in one of the mags where some receivers will now allow you to direct the surround signals to the surround speakers you like.

Got an old prologic receiver laying around? Heres what I did. Run rca from surround l and r preout from present receiver to input on prologic receiver. I use cd input. Set surround field to wide. Attach speaker wire from older receiver center to your rear center speaker, basically 6.1. My sony 444es does not support 6.1 or 7.1 So this is my option until upgrade. However, I only use this method of 6.1 for watching movies. When listening to multi-channel music I much more prefer 5.1. When using this type of set-up you will need to adjust the volumn of the rear center(s) independently, using the older receiver. Hey, it's an option.
