Who else is getting effected by this? I'm in Hartsville and we are not getting too much damage. My Girlfriend lives in Camden and they have it pretty bad but nothing like Columbia and the Midlands. Her basement is seeping water through the concrete. Looks like I'll be gutting a basement in the not too distant future.

A lot of houses down about 100 miles from me are involuntarily house boats right now. Over 500 roads have been closed including major interstates for 30 mile stretches. I don't know how much the nation sees on TV or other media outlets but the devastation is unreal for this area.
The Governor of SC stated that this kind of situation hasn't been seen down here for over a thousand years. Now think about that and then think about how old America is.
Makes Hugo look like a joke and Hugo went inland. This hurricane (that was an indirect cause) never even came close to hitting land.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~ -
Yea I remember Hugo well. I was in college at Coker and we didn't have power for 3 days. The devastation from the winds was unreal but this water has in my opinion blown it away. This picture hit home for me. It's Gervais Street Bridge in Downtown Columbia. My girlfriend and I went for a walk and played on the rocks there this past summer.....

xjghost, when was the last time you remember actually seeing the sun? I think it's been two full weeks for me. Reminds me of Washington State.

Come to Chicago in the winter bro, the Sun takes a nap for 3 months. You start feeling like your in the artic circle where you get 6 months of darkness.
I love the drama of the whole "1000 years" comment. Especially when we've only been keeping records for a little over 100. I have a feeling in 1015 A.D., nobody was frickin' around to record it....unless the Indians scrolled something on a cave wall.HT SYSTEM-

There is a reason I live in SC. It's my home. Only other places I'd consider living are Chattanooga and Western North Carolina. I've lived in Florida, TN, KY, and NJ and SC is my home. As for the 1000 years comment I'm sure some climatologist said something about it. They may not have been taking records but they can tell what happened by the geology.HT/2Channel: Emotiva MMC-1, Adcom GFA-555II, Polk SDA 3.1's, Teac TN-300 TT, Polk Center and Sub.

Yes and no, sometimes it takes a more climatic event to leave evidence, such as Glaciers, Oceans rising and falling, meteor strikes, volcanic eruptions. 1000 years from today, nobody will remember this flood and I doubt any physical evidence will remain.
Your familiar with the Chicago fire ? If someone 1000 years from now dug up the ground, they'd find an ash layer in many areas where it was all buried. One might assume it was from climate that was so hot it burned everything. Nobody would have heard of Mrs. O'Leary's cow.
Geology is fascinating to me. It can give you a good outline of major events in certain time periods, but what it can't do is give you day to day weather forecasts from the past.HT SYSTEM-

The 1000 year figure is just an attention grabbing misinterpretation by reporters and some politicians of what the percentage chance each year is of South Carolina receiving more than 20 inches of rain in a few day period. A one hundred year event is 1 percent chance each year. A thousand year event is a 0.1 percent chance per year. The same amount of rainfall could occur next year or may not occur for another ten thousand years.
Fact is it flooded a lot of area and people will need assistance the next few months to rebuild with no flood insurance coverage. -

Check that homeowners insurance policy, some may have it built in. Now would be a good time to open a mold remediation company down there. The other thing this will play into is real estate prices. Gonna be hard to sell something now in those areas.
I remember looking at various insurance policies from different brokers when I bought my house. I was surprised to see many included the phrase "acts of God" were not covered.
Isn't everything an act of God ? Wind-floods-lightning strikes- freezing/snow- hail, etc. ? I laughed....and told them to take a hike.
Hopefully some without flood insurance can apply for government assistance since it was designated a natural disaster area....much like those in Sandy's path did. Good luck with that though, lots of people still fighting over that one.HT SYSTEM-

Flood insurance is optional. A few years ago, unless you were in a flood plain,
you couldn't get it. Anyone can buy it now. That's a very good idea.
