It's really going to depend on what phone platform you currently use, iOS or Android.
The Apple Watch (I own) is great. Of course you need an iPhone to tether it to. I'm not sure at all how the Androids function. No excuses! -
Hire a nerd wearing a calculator watch?

That's silly, of course you don't need a smartwatch to tell the time, a $10 timex at your local walmart will do the job just fine. A smart watch is a waste of money...
Also you don't need a cell phone...waste of money
Also you don't need a Lexus to get from one point to another...wasted of money
Also you don't need Legacy Focus speakers to listen to music...waste of money
etc etc... -
So, I wear a 'dumb' watch - have my entire life. Oh, if I had a nickel for every time I've been poked fun for not using my phone to check the time...
I used to say (in addition to the watch being a nice accessory) that it was just more convenient to look at my wrist for the time. To that, I'd get "why carry around an extra item?? What... are you too lazy to pull your phone out of your pocket to check the time?" Huh, now everyone who used to say that to me seems to want an extra item to carry around because they're too lazy to pull their phone out of their pocket! -
People are hilarious, they go out and spend extra to buy a phone that has a large screen then go off and buy a tiny watch. Marketing has you by the family jewels.

It has nothing to do with marketing, it has everything to do with functionality. Of course nobody 'needs' any of this stuff, the same way we don't need hi-fi. I really don't understand why people get so hung up on this and don't get why people want a watch. I'm one of the "hilarious" people you just referenced as I have a 5.5" phone and a watch so I'll offer my thoughts:
If I'm out riding my bike and want to take a peek at the time, or answer a call, or answer a text, or check my distance on the current ride, or check my heart rate, or check how many calories I've burned, or check my elevation (that's a thing here in Colorado), or check where I'm at on my route...I do that on my watch instead of having to stop and pull the phone out of the pack and do it there.
If I'm sitting at a restaurant and want to check something on the internet, or watch a quick YouTube video, or check my stocks, or check the weather forecast, or write an email, or buy movie tickets, or have a quick peek at my finances, or show someone a photo, or take a photo, or may out a trip using GPS...I do all that on my phone because it has a big beautiful screen that is more suited for that kind of stuff than a watch.
I'm not picking on Willow, but I genuinely don't understand how people can't appreciate why someone may want a device like this. -
I want one and will have one but.... I have to wait till Christmas apparently. Call it marketing or whatever you like but to each our own. But as it have lots of great features as stated above and the new update will make an even better wearable.
Now if our bloody loonie would come out of the toilet it wouldn't cost me 25% more then you guys down south.
Cheers, Roger -

Fair enough. Why not get dedicated equipment for each one of these.... You do for audio. So you basically bought a HTiB watch.
And yes it's marketing, they make you believe you need this. What did people do long ago. They just drove their friggin' bikes texts and calls can wait. -
I'm not following you, getting dedicated equipment is exactly what I did. I bought a watch for a specific set of tasks and use the phone for another set of tasks. I don't get the comparison to an HTiB as an HTiB is an all-in-one solution that tries to do everything in one product, by purchasing different devices for specific tasks I've literally done the opposite of getting an HTiB. Methinks you're grasping at straws here...
Maybe it's marketing for YOU, but I don't think I NEED one of these, I just WANT one...simple as that.
Can I ride a bike without my watch and still enjoy the experience? Absolutely, and in fact sometimes I do just that when I want to completely disconnect. But more often I like the functionality that it provides and take it with me.
What did people do long ago, BEFORE surround sound? They just listened to two channel music and watched movies in stereo. Why the hell did you shell out thousands of dollars for surround sound gear? See how stupid that sounds??? -
It's simply the want and convenience factor for me with owning an Apple Watch.
Willow, did you need to build a big home theater or did you simply want it? Thats pretty much what I thought. If my home theater suddenly went away, my life would move on. Same thing if my Apple Watch went bye bye.
Kind of like those that need 500+HP cars these days.No excuses! -
So the point of a smart watch is so you can watch you tube flying down a hill on a bike? Or is it because you want to know how many calories you have burned while your not finished working out. Is the point of a smart watch to have it because reaching into your pocket to grab the phone is a chore? Pardon my ignorance but I just dont get it, what exactly are they for?

Did you event read my post...whoever said anything about YouTube on a watch? I really don't get what part you don't understand. Smart watches are designed to replace specific functions of a phone that can be performed on a smaller screen and that can be useful in situations where it's less convenient to take out your phone.
Since some people seem to have such a difficult time understanding this I'll provide a couple real world examples:
If I'm on my bike it's much easier to do certain things that can be done on my watch instead of stopping, pulling off my pack and getting out the phone. I'm not gonna watch YouTube or compose an email on the watch, but things that I mentioned in my post above like taking a quick call or checking my route work great on the watch. As for your specific question about checking my calories, yes that's a very valid thing someone may want to do - if I'm doing a workout targeting a specific calorie count then yes it helps to keep track of those along the way.
All the same things can be said for hiking, which I do even more of (though often when I go hiking the wife is with me and we like to unplug completely so don't bring the watch or phone). You can just replace biking or hiking with your exercise of choice and this same logic applies to most of them.
I also use it when sitting in meetings at work, sure I can bring the phone out but a quick glance down at my wrist is much less distracting to the group. When we're out walking around or shopping or whatever it's also nice to just have quick access to things on the watch instead of pulling the phone out of the pocket.
The watch, like almost everything in our modern world, is a convenience and not a necessity. I could live without it if I had to, but I don't have to. -

Re-read the replies to enlighten your ignorance. Wow.
