Depends on the machine. Probably a couple of dollars, but there were some wonderful quality machines made (although, unfortunately, they don't age very well).

Tapes, probably not much (if any).

There are those of us who still use VHS HiFi... for audio recording. In many respects, it was the best-quality consumer analog audio recording format ever available.

There are some people who still use them. I still have my 3 Stooges series. Uncle Buck & a slug of video concerts. Id like to get them converted to dvd or computer file whatever its called stuff. If my wife had it her way it be in the trash. Most Goodwills will take them. Heck the one near me has way too many & wants top dollar for them

I still have a ton of old Late Night with David Letterman super VHS tapes. Back when Letterman came on after Carson on NBC....man, those were the days.

I still got a Sony a HI FI VHS player and a lot of music rcorded on VHS tapes full of music, plus a lot of concerts on that format the wife has all her Duran Duran videos that she watches or listens to as background music. It's nostalgic but we do watch some movies on it once and a while.

Yep, I use to also record CD's to my Panasonic hi-fi machine in the late 80's. It rivaled my Teac X2000R R-R in every respect (but didn't have nearly the cool factor). Precursor to the DAT machines.

    No.

Except for archiving old tapes to a digital format.

I do a lot of that and have five VHS, 3 Beta and Super beta, 1 "M" format, 1 One inch helical, 1 D-2, and about thirty others including every common real to reel format.
Plus every pro video format up through Digi Beta. And when they fail if I can't easily repair them they get tossed in the trash.

But if you want to record something today get a DVR.

Yep, poor mans R2R. Only the higher end VCR'S were quite good for audio recordings. The el cheapos were....just that, cheap. I see no reason to use one though, but hey, to each his own.

You also might want to learn more about what a lousy "charity" Goodwill is. There are much more worthy organizations to give stuff to. (IMO). We give our things to a local, church-run thrift shop. :)

They have to be "hi-fi" which had the audio heads on a helical drum. Standard VCR's had a fixed audio head and terrible S/N ratio.

Yeah, Steve is correct. Super Beta Hi-Fi was actually superior and many TV stations may still use the beta format currently. Sony lost out in the big marketing battle and VHS eventually took control. I remember a friend of mine paid in excess of a grand to get one of the first Sony Betamax's, a behemoth with a pop up mechanism. In the mid-80's I got a Super Beta Hi-Fi and it was around 4 or 5 bills IIRC on a close-out, but had good sound and video quality.

I am not sure if it is the whole county or just Kali but they wont take toys because of some led paint law. They would have to determine if each item was led safe so they dont take them at all. that is a damn shame I grew up on led paint and now I am supposed 86 all of my kids old toys? My first slot car set was from Goodwill and it was the bomb.

Oh back on topic, I got a Toshiba machine that burns VHS to DVD, I was surprised how any tapes had protection and i could not rip them. I think the machine carped out on me before I was done ripping everything. Moving parts suck.
