Polkaaudio series 2 speakers

A client of mine was moving and graciously gave me a polka surround speaker set. Too big to lug around anymore, he said. They say Polkaaudio monitor series 2 on the big speakers. There are actually 5 satellite, 1 subwoofer ? and 2 floor speakers with stand. Now I need to go out and purchase a receiver for them but I cannot find any specs on them: impedence, watts per channel. Where would i find this stuff and what receiver shoulfd i get that would match the speakers?

well if you could give us more info we could help more. there should be model numbers on them somewhere.
  • Hi Pitdog2,

I looked all over them and the only thing I found was a bar code on one of the larger speakers: M10 9007701
and the words Polkaudio Monitor Series 2.

They are black and super heavy and the 2 satellite speakers and subwoofer are without labels.

Monitor 10's are very nice speakers. Keep above 50wpc to 200wpc. Are you looking to do 2 channel music or 5/1 or 7/1 ? What do you do mostly = Music % Movies. Those speakers will match well with Marantz Sansui Yamaha Denon Harman Kardon & many more. Do you want a powered subwoofer & what is you budget ? You can buy local 5/1 receivers all day long for 50.00 up.... If you have a decent budget go with a receiver that you can add a amp LATER ON for the front speakers

Yep, monitor 10 series II, circa 1990. Do yourself a big favor and drop in a set of the RDO-198 tweeters. Your ears will thank you.

  • Okay, great to know they are fine speakers. My teenage son does abit of gaming but music and movies would be the main use. we are mac based and have misogynistic on iPhones. would be fun to spin some records too. Sounds like the speakers are good enough to build on. I will need a5-1 receiver, 1 guess as there are 5 speakers. Can I get a decent one on Amazon for around $250? Last system I owned was a stereo with an 8 track and lots of pretty lights, so I am definitely on a steep learning curve here. Any suggestions much appreciated
  • When you do start looking skip the middle of the road stuff. Get a decent AVR such as Yamaha Aventage or Pioneer Elite you will thank me later.
    Yamaha RXA1030, Yamaha CD-S2100, Yamaha AS-2200, Bluesound node 2i

    Polk SDA 1C modded
    Polk CS350 LS x2
    Kimber 8TC
    Sony 55" Bravia

  • A $250.00 new receiver will be a waste of $250.00.

Motorhead is right. My first receiver purchase was the Yamaha RX-V373 and it was right around that price new. Specs look good for power but in reality it's way too low to really get everything out of it. Unfortunately, I wasn't using this site for advice before I bought it.

If I had, I would have checked out accessories4less as many here suggest.

Find yourself one that has preouts so you can add an external amp later if you want.

I have one of these little Marantz's, and it sounds really quite good, especially with an external amp driving the mains (which is what you will eventually want to do). And don't let the 50 wpc scare you, they are honest watts and warm great synergy with Polks.

The good thing about those Polks is that they are easy to drive, so the marantz could do fine until you save up for an external amp:

    Congrats and have fun!

  • This is all really good stuff folks! accessories4less will save me heaps. Good buy Amazon, pun intended.

Looks like $250.00 is at the low end and $600 is the sweet spot for getting it all in an avr. However, that Marantz which is really discounted should do it for my small rooms in this 900 ft. home. Nice recommendations

    A couple questions:

Can you buy a 7.1 avr and just run 5 speakers on it and add speakers later on , or is that just not done?

Is the external amp just to make the system louder or does it allow you to add better speakers later on, or helps push air into a larger room. Preouts a must but why?

How do I ensure that the avr and the Monitor 10s are matched in impedence )ohms)?
I cannot find a spec sheet on the Monitior 10s out there on the web. i do have a multimeter somewhere. Is it a simple matter of hooking it up to the ports on the back of the speaker?

Here are pics as requested to ensure they are tens.

Oh yeah, that's the ticket. Upgrade to SDA as soon as possible, in fact, sell all the Polks you just got to fund the purchase of a pair.

Does anyone read? His last receiver had an 8-track player stuffed in it.
