smoke and speakers

i've heard people who are selling speakers mention that they are in a smoke free environment. are they just saying this as an added plus to their condition or does smoke rot away drivers, surrounds, grills, change wood color, whatever? is it really that bad for speakers?

Hmmm I never thought about that... makes me wonder if my dad is slowly hurting his epi500s (he smokes)... Although its probably just a myth to try to raise the value of used speakers.

Funny that....
I don't know what kind of "sonic" effects smoke would have, I imagine it would change the sound somewhat because of the residue. Smoke, cigarette or otherwise will leave a residue behind and can damage finishes as well as penetrating exposed wood grain and changing the color.
Over all it is just plain GROSS. -
Smoking cigs leaves residue on all surfaces in the smoking area. Just get a white cloth, squirt a little dab of windex (or whatever) on it, then rub across surface. Enjoy your little yellow stain, you can even name it if you want.

My friend's Uncle's family are all heavy smokers. Like 4 or so smokers in the same house. I recently took a Pioneer stereo receiver off his hands, it took 10 years or so of constant smoke...
The thing still operates (ALMOST) flawlessly, the only problem it has is the power supply will *click off and on randomly for a short period every once in a while when it is overloaded*...
My ...'s amps have taken constant smoke and still work flawlessly, except the one amp he gave me with a fried right channel...which I use for my center channel amp...
I think it has little affects, but smoking is just gross as Steve said...
My ...'s old house, had white walls *with pictures on the wall*, I see it like this...if you smoke, don't hang pictures on the wall. If you do, please dont ask your fellow family members to help you clean, dust, remodel that involves taking the pictures OFF the wall...no one wants to see a YELLOW framed square remaining on your wall.....that is some nasty stuff...
Get your friend, family member that smokes to cough into a napkin.....it WILL turn yellow.....

Biggest reason non-smoker status sells anything is odor. Grill cloths will hang onto it... Otherwise effect on speaker performance is nil.More later,

Speaking of sanity (or lack there of)...we used to have these really big MTX speakers on display and they smelled like cocoa. We eventually sold the displays and brought out another pair. They also smelled liked cocoa. WTF.

Of course I am no expert on the subject, but I really thought that Stereo Review did an excellent article on the subject in the August 1974 issue where Julian Hirsch demonstrated that the cigarette smoke coated the drivers and caused a "sluggish and slower" reaction time to the input signal In the same article it was demonstrated that the smoke also caused the foam material (circa mid 70's) to breakdown quicker.Rocky Bennett
