The wife likes to occasionally have one on one time with each of the grandkids. This last weekend was one such time. She took our 6 year old to one of those Marvel characters on stage events. All the usual suspects, Super hero's, etc, were present along with all the necessities to drain the parents wallets.

One such necessity was face painting, and she got in line pronto. Picture a huge arena stuffed with kids/parents/Grandparents all happy and juiced up for the event.

Except for one couple....who were screaming at each other using 4-lettered words 10 feet from where she was standing in line. At the base of these 2 morons was a 5 year old boy, obviously theirs, crying his eyes out begging his parents to stop. Everyone is looking around wondering if anyone from the venue is going to say something. A cop strolls up and asks them to please tone it down or remove themselves. No dice....they toned it down for 30 seconds and right back at it.

The cop then picks up the child, asks him if he'd like to get his face painted and walks by my wife who is next in line. He asks if she'd mind if he went next, having just witnessed this whole thing I don't have to tell you her response. The girl doing the face painting calmly wipes the boys tears, and asks which he'd like. Spiderman it is....and when she was done the cop gave the boy a mirror to look at himself when a smile came across his face.

Cop throws the girl a 20 out of his own pocket for a 15 buck face painting and tells her to keep the change. Picks up the boy and brings him back to his parents, who are still going at it and had no idea their son was even gone. Taps them on the shoulder and dead silence happens. With stunned looks on their faces, they quietly thanked the cop and moved on. I would imagine during the show they had a lot to reflect on....I hope anyway.

This is what it sometimes takes to bring some back to reality. Kudo's to the Rosemont Cop who took it upon himself to diffuse a situation that could have gone another way for the parents and the boy.

Awesome story. Kudos to the cop and your wife. We need more people like that in this world. Too many people just out for themselves.

That really is a great story Tony. It would have been so easy - and probably natural given his occupation - for the cop to deal with the situation a bit differently. And no doubt he is NOT trained to offer free face painting to a distressed child instead of arresting his parents for public disturbance. Which makes it all the more remarkable. That kid will ALWAYS remember that moment, and police officers will hold a special place in his heart. Hopefully his parents hearts are changed as well...

Me neither. Different though just reading about it and experiencing it for yourself. In spite of all the bad we hear about in the headlines, not enough of these stories ever make it to the forefront.
