  • I really enjoyed the article.

The dumbest move I ever made in my entire life was selling my sequential serial numbered pair of Marantz 9's so I could buy a motorcycle.

That system was the best sounding I "remember" every listening to. I had replaced all the tube with matched sets of Telefunken tube and it had the "smoothest sound" of any amplifier I have ever owned.

So I do agree with his conclusion that tubes do make a difference and they do wear out at different rates too.

I liked the article. Lengthy, but well written and informative without being preachy.

Tubes amps are almost always "smooth".
Sand amps aren't normally. But there are exceptions
to both rules. Old VS. new has it's own set of trip hazards.
My SS Marantz does smooth just fine. I did have to recap it to
get rid of that vintage muddy sound. It now has clean bass and
better highs. Any of those vintage tube amps are going to
take a lot of work to make them reliable and to sound right.
And tube prices are going nowhere but up.
