Hendrix died 45 years ago today

Hard to believe. When "Are You Experienced" came out it was like nothing else, one of my buddies almost immediately figured out how to play "Fire" on guitar, and then taught me, and then "Purple Haze." I still consider "The Wind Cries Mary" to be one of the best songs ever written, and after nearly half a decade its never lost its freshness to me. When I first heard Are You Experienced I thought it was a perfect album. When Electric Ladyland came out, I played it before school every day for a year and a half. Hendrix lived his music, elevated jamming to an art form, and invented stuff that was so far beyond his time its crazy. Mitch Mitchell was a fantastic drummer too. The Jimi Hendrix Experience lived its music and it was a sad day when they announced his death.

  • I still get chills to this day listening to Jimi's music. If you ever get the chance visit the EMP music museum in Seattle. It was built by Paul Allen cofounder of Microsoft. He has a permanent section dedicated to the hometown Mr. Hendrix. Yes, the loss of JH was nothing short of tragic.

I remember being with a couple of High School friends when we heard about it..Stunned us all...we were all into the music Jimi did..as well as a lot of others at the time...Left a huge void...Janis..Jimi..Jim...all gone too close together..Even today when I spin one of his releases...I think to myself, had he lived, what would he be doing now...It is very interesting to speculate...By the way..get your ears on Freedom...the new release of his performance at the Atlanta Pop Festival in 1970.. Very good material on that one!...kid you not!...
  • I remember the day. My thoughts go back to having a friend who was a left handed guitarist who could have bought any guitar he wanted, but bought a right handed strat strung and set it up backwards. I am still amazed that 50 years later he is still a huge influence on guitarists all over.

I was a freshman in college and I remember it well.

Soon to follow were Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Duane Allman. Tragic events that left a lasting impression of those of us from that generation who remember the music as new, innovative and exciting.

The odd thing, to me anyway, he predicted he wouldn't make it past 27. Shame such great talent left so early, but what a mark he made.

I have owned a few of JH albums through the years, and I never understood the hype with him, I put him and Nirvana in the same category...

  • Brother James was truly out there. Few people could take the type of "visions" he had, and transform them into music and words. ESPECIALLY 45 years ago. Then there's the way he could play that guitar. Like nobody before or after him.

I am fortunate to have seen him and Janis before they both passed.

I would put the Artist once again known as Prince out there as someone heavily influenced by Hendrix, and in some ways he comes so very close, but there is only one Jimi

I wouldn't flame you on it Larry, but I would disagree. Overrated in the context of today's guitar and musical talent in some ways perhaps, but given what was going on with guitar in his era, he was a revelation and a revolution, worthy of the praise he gets IMO for his brief visit on the earth.

No one was doing what he and the Experience did when they did it. So for me it's in that context that I'd have to disagree. For Nirvana, there were folks were doing what some version of what Cobain did, they just didn't break it big like he did. (LOL - now I'll get flamed for that!) FWIW, I love Nirvana too!

John how do you explain Keith Richards?

I saw Prince open for the Stones before he really hit big. He really rocked his material for the crowd. The Hendrix influence was very obvoius. He never the less got booed of of stage for being dressed like a girl. Funny not much more so than Mick and the crowd loved him lol

I've always enjoyed his studio stuff more than his live work. His first three albums are spectacular. Once Noel Redding left the band the magic wasn't quite as strong.

I read at the time he died he was looking for a new musical direction, perhaps jazzier, which could have worked. I think about songs like "If 6 was 9", "The Wind Cries Mary", and can see Jimi writing more in that vein.

Part of the deal was being there. A younger person looking back
has heard a lot of music done since the time of Hendrix.
But the influence he had at the time was immense. Other artists
of the late 60's on had a lot to think about after hearing his work.
There have been other artists that have the same effect.
Every few years someone comes along and shakes things up.
So every generation knows a couple of artists like Hendrix that sets
the pace for years to come. Love him or hate him, you can't deny
the effect he had on music.

I read that both Pete Townshend and Eric Clapton were slightly intimidated by him when he became popular.
