The "fixed" level is basically "line" level, and is pretty standard at about .3v rms. The variable is just that - there is a volume control in your cd player that will adjust this output level - usually anywhere from 0 ~ about 2.5v rms.... The variable would allow you to adjust your output level, either to perform a unique level matching to another component, or to bypass the need for a pre-amp.

Not really sure what the tool is for? Usually, the volume adjustment is with the remote. As for servicing, new belts are not a bad idea. The electrolytic caps have a 25 year life, before they start to deteriorate...

Thank you for info. Im going to run it direct to Denon POA amp bypassing the preamp, which is also hooked to the POA. So i will use Variable

That "tool" is actually the locking key for the transport. There will be a slot on the bottom, insert & give it a quarter turn. It's used to keep the transport from shifting around while being shipped. Leave it out while in use, otherwise the drawer will not open & the tray will not spin.

I ran my Sony straight to an amp for many years. That's what the variable out is for.

Many report the sound quality is not as good using the variable out on a CDP.

It will only be used as background music being its a multi disc player-so i dont have to mess with single disc when doing projects. I will use the 2910sacd for critical listening. Thanks for the info

You have a pre-amp, so FIXED! If not, then variable is passable directly to amp, but that is not preferred!

I was thinking of using it direct so i have remote for volume. The POA has both L&R hookups for 1-normal preamp & 1-cd direct each side. If i hook it to cd direct i can be lazy with remote while doing projects

i did this when i first joined the forum & had great results-for what it was. I didnt notice too much difference with these old ears. I actually thought it sounded pretty darn good. I dont recall if the Sony cd player i had back then had the 2 outputs like this one has. That was the question i had. When i do try it on this player i will turn down the power on the amplifier first before hooking it up

The analog line-level output of most CD and multiformat players, IME, is quite "hot" relative to the traditional line level standard. Depending on the drive requirements of any given power amp, there's usually plenty of signal (gain) available from a "mainlined" disc player to drive a power amp directly (with an attenuator, of course!) and no active preamp.

It will depend on the drive requirements of the power amp. As Gary Kaufman says, preamps need [to supply] drive, not gain" in most real-world applications. :- )

Hooked it up direct & sounds great, cdp to amp to speakers. Then shut it off & later tested the sacd to preamp to amp & all is working great. Now i can pop the amp on & 5 disc on & use the remote volume to make it easier. The Sony cdp player has the wood side panels that match with the wood side panels on the preamp & amp :) i may design some wood side panels for the 2910 so all units matchkwyqpa7n3qw9.jpg

That's a nice looking stack. I always thought running my Sony CDP output straight to an amp sounded great.

I had a Sony with variable out. The maxed out variable was as loud as the standard fixed output.

It sounds great. Like i stated above when i joined the forum i tried it with a smaller Sony with great results. Im not much into the 5 disc or more players & where i can load it up & also have a Remote for volume it sure makes it sweet when working on projects & get a phone call & to have volume control on old separates is a bonus. I also still have the sacd player hooked to the preamp.. As far as does it sound better than running through preamp-havent compared because it doesnt matter
