Security Camera Systems

I've had some issues the last year or two at my house and my office. Recently a guy was caught in my son's jeep. We have been fixing a few things on it so it's been sitting in front of my office/shop for the last couple weeks. Fortunately a local sheriffs deputy saw him and recognized him as not being where he should be. Over the next couple days I have found 2 other vehicles damaged. Two years ago 2 locks were cut off a trailer here and it stolen. I think it's past time to put something up to protect my property while I'm not on it. I want an HD system. I have been looking around but reading mixed reviews. Anyone have any first hand experience in these systems and or a recommendation? Recent articles on the newer systems and what to look for would be great. Thanks!

Like what? $500 - $1K but would like to stay closer to $500. I'm thinking 5 cameras. One might have to be wireless. I have a 50 x 52 building. Two side doors that are tied to the ADT system. Two 12' bay doors that have a motion detector between them and an office door and window on that wall. The building is monitored by ADT. It's the cars and other stuff around it that got hit. I've also had strange people stop by acting strange too. There is a 48' trailer behind it for storage. Any camera's on the back will not be able to see the cars stored behind the trailer. So I think I might have to put a wireless one on the trailer. Just researching right now. Thought this group might have some experience with it.

  • Geovision will be good for you. HD channels all you want for residential. Cameras, expect a couple hundred at most. Low lighting. That is a different setup.

It has been many years for me. But I still recommend Geovision. Txcoastal will know much more.

    Lorex.

Best I've seen on the market for a consumer level. They can get really expensive when you get into the commercial level stuff too. But their set ups are modular so you can expand them easily while starting out with just the basic system.

The important stuff is TVL resolution. Sub 600 gets you grainy picture quality that can be hard to see. You really want something over 700. Especially if you are wanting night vision.

If you want to save on disk space, get motion sensor cameras that can be turned on when motion is sensed.

For night vision, depends on how far you want to see at night. If you are just monitoring entryways and such, you need to find out how far from the entry way the camera will be. If the entry way is 50 feet from the camera mount point then you need at least 65 feet of night vision.

Beyond that, they are pretty simple. Most come with a mouse and you don't really need a keyboard. Some even come with web servers that post a page that you can even log in to remotely to see your surveillance system.

If you don't want just a surveillance system then go with an alarm company.
